Amidst so many categories, one catches our eye. In a sea of genres and stories—among them, many realities—coming-of-age represents society more than a political drama ever could. But why make such a claim? Well, time is a one-way street: there is no turning back. One day, you are just a child trying to understand why time moves so slowly during school hours; the next, you are writing your first resume; and, in the following moment, you find yourself with a fully formed body—or rather, a body transformed by time.

So, when we sit down to watch a movie about annoying teenagers, we are trying to understand the psyche behind it all. However, there is something rarely mentioned when we bring up teen movies: refusal. That is why we need to go deeper...

Linear Time and the Uncertainties of Youth

The reality of a young person becomes precarious the moment something is missing. This lack does not mean a material absence, but rather a shift in the perception of time. Nevertheless, understanding that time will not bring those days back is also a dangerous realization. The central question is: time may be cyclical after the last beat of blood on the left side of the chest, but reason and uncertainty transform it into something linear. It is a constant notion of farewells, within which a question resides: should we face youth abruptly, or accept that, despite the uncertainties, there is still time left to live?

From a certain point on, youth movies became more delicate, more empathetic. Not because of a sudden rarity within the genre, but because your own view of the world changed. We could cite a chaotic example like The Doom Generation (Gregg Araki), or a more captivating one like The Edge of Seventeen. What matters is not how we state that youth is a crucial stage, but rather emphasizing that there is no "right time" to understand that growing up goes beyond physical changes or natural progression: it deals individually with how trauma affects us.

"You can run, but you can't hide..."

Martyrs, Love, and Growing Up

Time walks a fine line between understanding and punishment. In Lady Bird, her desire is her martyr. Leaving Sacramento seemed like the right choice—and indeed it was—but she didn't expect that time would demand its toll in the form of nostalgia, in the form of love.

Love in youth seems illusory, almost plastic. We spend our time idealizing something that wouldn't be possible even in dreams; however, certain complexities transform its presence during this period into something more than magical: truly poetic. Thus, accepting that not everything presented to us belongs to us is a constant. This constancy ultimately defines who you are at the end of the journey. And as much as it might seem that youth comes to an end, can you name a single reason why a human being should reject this phase?

Therefore, when we talk about limits, youth simply doesn't fit the term.

And, much like in Lady Bird, the idea of coming-of-age speaks far more about maturing within a snapshot of life than across the entirety of it. In other words, it offers a perspective on a crucial chapter, rather than the complete transformation—which remains linear, just like time itself.

The Heroic Journey of Everyday Life

Movies about growing up can also be subtle. I say this referencing a very popular film: Spider-Man (2002).

Peter Parker is a perfect example of this process: suddenly, responsibility catches up with him. He is enchanted by freedom, yet refuses it out of fear. His initiative to become the city's hero is nothing short of a metaphor for becoming the hero of his own life—after all, you are the sole representative of your dream on the face of the Earth.

The facets of being young are endless: countless mistakes, successes, regrets, but ultimately, lessons that will mark us for eternity. It is like imagining a future society with no remaining trace of our existence. It means realizing that, no matter how hard we try, we will never be truly grand.

The Endurance of Youth

Yet, at the epicenter of this text, there are perspectives...

Perhaps 2,000 years from now we will be nothing, but today we are something, we are someone. And that is enough to understand why Lady Bird, Call Me By Your Name, and other examples are so effective when it comes to growing up through cinema. So many people see themselves in these characters in a search for meaning—and isn't that one of the most beautiful inspirations to witness as a human being?

So live young, regardless of how old you are.

Be young, no matter what stage of life you are in.

Intention matters more than perspective, more than any potential mistake. Consequently, others may not remember, but you will.

Lastly, we could have mentioned more than five movies, but that would take the focus away from our main point. We are talking human to human here, and right now, protect your youth. Don't let the thought of finite time bring you down. Movies have taught us something: if everything goes wrong, there will always be someone there to help you. After all, films are based on reality—and in it, we all live...

Em meio a tantas categorias, uma nos capta o olhar. Em um mar de gêneros e de histórias — entre elas, muitas realidades —, o coming-of-age representa a sociedade mais do que um drama político. Mas por que tal afirmação? Bem, o tempo é uma via de mão única: não há como voltar. Em um dia, você é apenas uma criança tentando entender o porquê de o tempo passar tão devagar na hora da escola; no outro, está escrevendo seu primeiro currículo; e, no seguinte, encontra-se com o corpo completamente formado — ou melhor dizendo, transformado pelos anos.

Então, quando nos sentamos para assistir a um filme de adolescentes chatos, estamos tentando compreender a psique por trás daquilo. Contudo, há algo pouco mencionado quando citamos produções teens: a recusa. Por isso, vamos mais a fundo...

O Tempo Linear e as Incertezas da Juventude

A realidade de uma pessoa na mocidade se torna precária a partir do momento em que falta algo. Essa carência não quer dizer que faltou algo material, mas sim a percepção do tempo. No entanto, entender que o tempo não trará de volta aqueles dias também é uma noção perigosa. A questão central é: o tempo pode ser cíclico após a última pulsação de sangue do lado esquerdo do peito, mas a razão e a incerteza o transformam em algo linear. Trata-se de uma constante ideia de despedidas, dentro da qual mora uma pergunta: devemos encarar a juventude de maneira abrupta ou entender que, apesar das incertezas, ainda há espaço para vivermos?

A partir de um certo dia, filmes sobre jovens passaram a ser mais delicados, mais empáticos. Não pela raridade de algo no gênero, mas sim porque a sua visão sobre o mundo mudou. Podemos citar um exemplo caótico como Geração Maldita (The Doom Generation, de Gregg Araki), ou um mais cativante como Quase 18 (The Edge of Seventeen). O importante não é como dizer que a juventude é uma etapa crucial, mas sim enfatizar que não existe o "momento certo" para entender que o crescer vai além da fisionomia ou da naturalidade: ele lida individualmente com a forma como o trauma nos afeta.

Mártires, Amores e o Amadurecimento

O tempo possui uma linha tênue entre compreensão e punição. No caso de Lady Bird, o seu desejo é o seu mártir. Sair de Sacramento parecia a escolha certa — e de fato foi —, mas ela não esperava que o tempo cobraria em forma de saudades, em forma de amor.

O amor na juventude parece ilusório, algo plástico. Vivemos o tempo inteiro idealizando algo que nem mesmo em sonhos seria possível; no entanto, certas complexidades transformam a presença desse sentimento nessa época em algo mais do que mágico: de fato, lúdico. Sendo assim, a perspectiva de entender que nem tudo o que nos é apresentado nos pertence é uma constante. Essa constância define, enfim, o que tu és ao final dessa jornada. E por mais que possa parecer que a juventude possui um fim, tente me citar uma razão pela qual o ser humano devesse rejeitar essa fase.

Portanto, quando falamos de limites, a juventude não casa com esse termo.

E, assim como em Lady Bird, a ideia de um coming-of-age fala muito mais sobre o amadurecimento em um recorte do que necessariamente nele como um todo. Ou seja, traz a perspectiva de uma fase crucial, mas não a transformação completa, que também é linear como o tempo.

A Heroica Jornada do Cotidiano

Os filmes que abordam o amadurecimento também podem ser sutis. Falo isso tendo como referência uma obra muito popular: Homem-Aranha (2002).

Peter Parker é um exemplo perfeito desse processo: de repente, a responsabilidade o alcança. Ele se encanta pela liberdade, mas a recusa pelo medo. A iniciativa de ser um herói da cidade nada mais é do que a metáfora de ser o herói da própria vida — afinal, você é o único representante do seu sonho na face da Terra.

As facetas de sermos jovens são inúmeras: incontáveis erros, acertos, arrependimentos, mas, em suma, aprendizados que nos marcarão por toda a eternidade. É como imaginar uma sociedade futura sem resquícios daquilo que fomos. Isso é compreender que, por mais que tentemos, nunca seremos totalmente grandiosos.

A Permanência da Juventude

Mas, como epicentro deste texto, há perspectivas...

Talvez daqui a 2 mil anos não sejamos nada, mas hoje somos algo, somos alguém. E isso é o suficiente para compreendermos por que Lady Bird, Me Chame Pelo Seu Nome (Call Me By Your Name), entre outros exemplos, são eficazes quando o assunto é amadurecer pelo cinema. Muitas pessoas se veem nos personagens na intenção de buscar significado — e não é essa uma das inspirações mais lindas de se ver enquanto ser humano?

Portanto, viva jovem, independentemente de quantos anos tiver.

Seja jovem, não importa a fase em que esteja.

A intenção vale mais do que a perspectiva, vale mais do que o possível erro. Consequentemente, outros podem não se lembrar, mas você irá.

Por último, poderíamos ter citado mais de cinco filmes, mas isso tiraria o foco do assunto principal. Estamos falando de ser humano para ser humano e, neste momento, preserve sua juventude. Não deixe que a ideia de um tempo finito o coloque para baixo. Os filmes nos ensinaram algo: se tudo der errado, sempre haverá alguém para te ajudar. Afinal, as telas são baseadas na realidade — e nela, todos nós vivemos...
