The Sensory Experience and the Central Question
First, The Seventh Continent stops being an ordinary film the moment it decides to transform the ideal—that is, the narrative—into the sensory. This decision is very precise because, in narrative terms, the sensory makes much more sense in building the environment; as, for example, the constantly repeated sounds, which serve as the main agents of discomfort. But then the film's main question arises: what is The Seventh Continent?
Narrative Niches and Absence
To understand the story, we have to go through the first stage: recognizing the characters. The central point is not about what we are seeing, but rather why. With this, the narrative niches emerge: Eva, Anna, and Georg.
Despite barely communicating, this evasion says a lot about the feature film, especially regarding the excess that dwells within it: absence.
The absence of love between the couple, the absence of a reference point for Eva... However, everything seems fine most of the time; after all, they form an ordinary family, but something is missing—something is missing all the time.
Sound Cycles and Repetition
Thus, the main source of answers we have are cycles; among them, I highlight the sounds once again, but one in particular caught my attention: the chewing noises.
Imagine yourself in a dining room, it is dark, with very little light. There are three of us, but the sound of the man's jaw stands out, and with each bite, a constant sensation remains that the world is on a countdown: 1, 2, 3... And nothing happens. This cycle repeats itself, and keeps repeating until the end of that night. But why? Well, in cinema, repetition operates under two hypotheses: error and emphasis. And in this second option resides doubt; you are invited to feel the discomfort, but beyond that, you have a free pass to get distracted. It is in this game of predator and prey that one of the most entertaining adversities of the seventh art lies: the opening for you to think about the film while you are inside it.
However, these repetitions are tiring to watch; but make no mistake, for we have an extremely important highlight aligned with the end of the projection.
Realism and Omission
When a work is based on true events, the tendency is for it to be as realistic as possible, which usually goes wrong—not due to inaccuracy, but rather because of gourmetization, meaning the false impression that everything, all the time, is important. So you must be asking yourself: "You mean The Seventh Continent is a realistic representation?" And yes, it is realistic, playful, and above all, cinematic, thus proving to be a complete work within what it proposes.
At the end of the narrative, we receive the news that the case still has no solution, which makes Haneke's work even more complex, since the technique of omission simultaneously reduces and increases the game of expectations, where we don't quite understand what is happening, but we are left with a single conclusion...
What can we say about a family that does not communicate?
Behavior, Reason, and Isolation
In theory, this is the reality of homes in both the 1980s and the 2000s. The idealization of the family figure caused a flaw, a breach in the gap of what is or isn't respectable, aligned, and regulated when we talk about an ordinary household. But how can we judge the family of Anna, Eva, and Georg as ordinary?
An ordinary family is not defined by its formation, but rather by its behaviors. In theory, everything was fine: jobs, school... But something was out of place, and that is the climax that robs one of sanity. When discomfort overwhelms reason, room opens up for irrational violence, which shatters the barrier of lucidity and gives vent to the worst thoughts. Yet, reason had not been present in this story for a very long time.
Another scene I would like to highlight is the car wash.
This sequence is very well placed during the film, because it shows that, even with the de facto isolation, the nuclear unit did not communicate; they did not perceive reality, pain, or even what could have been potential peace within each other, and that is sad.
Conclusion: Love and Insanity
As a conclusion, let us discuss a bit about a definitive solution: love.
Many view this perspective of seeing life as an illusory reality; however, affection is the only way to avoid reaching insanity, because it is all about chemistry. The idea that the pleasure hormone generates the physical satisfaction of the body, when combined with psychological satisfaction, makes reality a little less aggressive. It is not about what we want or don't want; it is about diminishing the constant pain that society has already rooted into the daily life of human beings.
Anyway, The Seventh Continent is not a film I recommend, because it is not worth the invested time. It is not a matter of being good or bad, but of recognizing that there is no pleasure in reacting to this work with maturity, or anything close to it. Therefore, if you are going to watch it, try to feel the agony, to feel part of the screen; perhaps that way you can take something away. Otherwise: welcome, you have been a survivor!

A Experiência Sensorial e a Pergunta Central
Bem, no cinema a repetição atua sob duas hipóteses: o erro e a ênfase.
Conclusão: O Amor e a Insanidade
