Cinema X Philosophy

 Cinema and Philosophy:

A Broad Field Shaping Narrative and Reality

To begin, let us understand what philosophy is. In academic terms, with roots in thinkers like Socrates and Plato, philosophy is the act of questioning the world through reason. For Karl Marx, on the other hand, it relates to the pursuit of happiness.

But how does this fit into cinema? It is something far deeper than mere metaphors or parables; it is the assertion that art, even when fictional, carries a real dimension. Morality brings characters to life, while subverted expectations and a film's core purpose form a raw adaptation of what cinematic philosophy represents. Thus, when we watch a film, we engage directly with the work of countless teachers, theorists, and thinkers.

Where Does Philosophical Thought Reside in Art?

Philosophy lives in the details—in the subtle nuances where we realize that the world exists through its imperfections. That is why, when Marx speaks of seeking happiness as a world vision, he refers not merely to a fulfilled expectation, but to a society that expresses and reflects goodness through rationality and emancipation.

Many films address philosophy unconsciously. Others do so explicitly, as seen in the works of Jean-Luc Godard and Jean Cocteau. Yet in the broader cinematic context, the simple act of moving the camera to frame a living human being is, in itself, a philosophical act.

The Art of Filmmaking: Market vs. Technology

Moving from abstract concepts to the practical side of production, modern cinema appears to be on life support—not out of threat, but out of dependency. This becomes evident when the industry prioritizes selling products over creating art.

This reflects the logic of a market-driven philosophy. Classic thinkers like Socrates, Plato, Marx, Hegel, and Simone de Beauvoir did not witness this threat in such an immediate form. For them, it was a distant concern, as their era lacked today's deep societal reliance on technology.

Technology emerged as a wave of modernization and new techniques for humanity. The goal is not to condemn it, but to pose a necessary question: to what extent is technology functional, and at what point does it become harmful?

In Wim Wenders' documentary Room 666, various filmmakers voiced their fears regarding the death of cinema. Answering the previous question, technology in cinema has not only automated art but also subordinated it to algorithms.

A thought experiment: Compare a recent superhero movie with Room 666 and attempt to write a critical review of both. You will notice that the former relies heavily on emotional appeal, whereas the latter adopts a more rational approach. Yet, despite their differences, both works remain grounded in philosophical inquiry.

Critical Thinking and Automated Routine

A film does not cease to be art simply because it fails to suit personal taste. The beauty of subjectivity lies in the fact that what fails to resonate with one person may carry profound meaning for another. Respecting these differences means exercising reason over emotional impulse.

This brings us to a crucial point: critical thinking. For many, critical thinking has eroded into mere common sense—not due to lack of practice, but because of a cognitive stagnation fostered by the system itself.

From this perspective, reason requires questioning and stepping outside routine, even through a question as simple as: "How was your day?"

In contemporary life, daily questions receive direct, mechanical answers with no room for sustained conversation. This reflects a market system that views individuals as functions rather than human beings. An accelerated routine leaves no space for reflection, turning human relationships into a series of missed connections where critical thinking is mistakenly reduced to deciding how to spend money.

Final Thoughts

Cinema synthesizes all these issues because art encompasses the complexity of life. From this premise, the philosophical perspective varies according to individual experience. It is a way of recognizing that the world, however unfair it may seem, remains an inexhaustible source of questions, answers, and contradictions.

Philosophy manifests in each individual's unique worldview—an ideal where everyday interactions cease to be automatic repetitions. Therefore, it is worth bringing a more reflective gaze to daily life and exploring domains to which routine usually closes the door, for science and philosophy continue to study human nature in all its dimensions, both inside and outside the mind.

Cinema e Filosofia

O Senso Crítico e a Rotina Automatizada

Respeitar essas divergências é exercer a razão acima do impulso emotivo.

I don't know the end, is it good?

 How Does It End?

An essay on how the end is the beginning!

The Invitation to Question and the Viewer's Journey

Let’s get straight to the point: why is the end the beginning?

When we start watching a movie, it is natural to ask ourselves at some point: "where is this going?". Most of the time, this question is more than necessary—it is intrinsic. I say this because, while watching Esteros (2016), I questioned the characters' journey and their conclusion. At first, that sparked my interest in the film, which shifted my perspective on how I consumed the work itself. But the most interesting part was yet to come: what does the end of a movie truly mean?

The end of every cycle is the beginning of a new one: a new perspective, a new lesson—in other words, a new beginning. So, from the moment cinema invites you to question the why of things, it is gradually placing you back into a position you were already in! Or rather: from the moment you allow yourself to question a movie or its ending, you are necessarily going beyond the narrative. In that moment, your imagination flows and takes you far away from the work; but in the minutes you find yourself paying attention to it again, you return to the cycle of "where is this going?". Consequently, the very factor that made you lose focus is what brings you back to your goal. We then return to another question: how long is the end really the end?

The Echo of Art and the Permanence of the Work

Works of art as a whole do not have endings, but rather character arcs.

Character arcs are the first association we make because they are the core of the film—what actually happens in the narrative. Therefore, we get the impression that when the credits roll, the movie ends. But let’s go deeper...

When we consume music, we go through three stages: discerning the melody, assimilating the lyrics, and finally, experiencing the work as a whole. However, it does not end there. Somewhere on the planet, someone is singing it, and that is the cool part about analyzing a work after its end: the echo. This echo is a transmutation, an active perspective that the end does not always mean the outcome. This is not just a subjective viewpoint, it is a fact: as long as there is someone in the world propagating what the work preaches, the end will not be the end.

The Illusion of the Period in Cinema

So then, when do we define the end?

We don't.

The end is a stage; as we said, endings are cycles. Consequently, we tend to seek resolution in everything that surrounds us, which is often premature.

In cinema specifically, a movie is not proposed to have an end: it will have a stopping point. This invites us to reflect on a striking characteristic: what happens to the characters after the end?

To use a concrete example, the ending of Vincent Gallo's The Brown Bunny (2003) is devastating, but thinking about what comes next for Bud is even worse. This melancholic air makes the film's echo sound much more narrative than strictly real. The story itself is whimsical in its absurdities; however, the idea that the character had to move on somehow stimulates what many screenwriters see as a narrative exercise—that is, using creativity to build an entire universe.

Social Numbness and the Artistic "Self"

Taking a somewhat pessimistic view, this practice exposes a society that is not ready to consume and spread creativity. But why do I draw this conclusion? Take any movie theater, with any movie: people are not there to have an experience (a reflection of an outdated and retrogressive film market), but rather to escape. This posture reflects the lack of a perception that human beings naturally possess: the artistic personality.

The artistic personality is part of the consciousness of human beings as... human beings! Or rather: society extracts the best from us when it comes to being functional, but it is limited when it comes to stimulating creativity, the artistic "self."

The Paradox of the End

Therefore, the encouragement of creativity is something that is born with us and stays with us entirely, stemming from concepts so individual that every human being alive on planet Earth right now could build their own worldview through art. That being said, is the end of art the end of humanity?

Probably yes.

The end of humanity is directly linked to the end of art (and vice versa). As long as that doesn't happen, we can reflect: is the end really the end?

The answer varies, but it will come back...

And when it returns, you will ask yourself if your end is directly linked to the end of what you consume, what you reproduce, and above all, what you practice in your daily life. We are the ones who create the end and, for now, we can conclude that the end of eternity also has an end—meaning, our paradox of the end that has no end would also constitute... the end!

A ilusão do ponto final no cinema

A anestesia social e o "eu" artístico

O paradoxo do fim

Under the water...

The Poetry of Time and Artistic Anarchy in Daughter of the Nile

Humanity lacks visions. Among them, the gaze of Hou Hsiao-Hsien stands out.

When we speak of art, we inevitably speak of the world. In addressing the world, we deal with experiences—and individual experience, in theory, is also collective. Daughter of the Nile inhabits a complex crossroads. The film does not stand out by being methodical or schematic, but by depicting daily life in a raw, unvarnished way. Unmercifully, the director extracts the maximum from his characters' routines. Within this cycle, the poetry of existing emerges: the act of living as time passes.

This text will not address the film in its entirety, but rather a specific fragment.

Youth as a Remnant and the Aesthetics of Absence

In a certain scene, a brief reflection arises on the passage of time in relation to youth. The passage ignites the flame of nostalgia, immediately transporting us to personal memories of adolescence. Even if you do not feel part of that scene, it comes to belong to you. Whether you want it to or not, the scene triggers you through the unique perspective of missing something—the absence.

Now absent, youth becomes a point of no return. In this particular film, it comes to be seen as a remnant—not in the sense of "now we are adults and have to work," but as temporal losses that affected memories and, consequently, identity itself.

In dialoguing with the idea of wasted time, the film invests, conversely, in the narrative of belonging to one's own reality. However, no character fully inhabits their present. This is most evident in the grandfather, whose lack of hope and degradation are exposed as he squanders all his money on gambling. Hou Hsiao-Hsien chooses mental isolation as a narrative torture.

Frames, Static Camera, and the Color of Reality

The camera is cinema's primary tool, but on its own, it does nothing. Understanding images requires creativity, alongside the transposition of the reality that will become a film. Regardless of whether the work is realistic or not, there comes a moment in the projection where the image inevitably takes on frames.

These frames define the crucial aesthetics of the piece. Here, we encounter a static camera: it does not move frantically, nor does it seek easy spectacle. Yet, in harmony with the narrative, the director's choices elevate the film from a mere cult title to something memorable.

It is not about making the most beautiful film, but about embellishing reality—or rather, understanding that while there is color in daily life, there is also the black of darkness and the paleness of gray.

Expressive Slowness and the Familial Void

The narrative of Daughter of the Nile is intentionally paced. This is a defining characteristic of East Asian cinema that gives us time to absorb the story. Going further, we establish an intimate connection with the characters: we stop to understand even their most inhospitable quirks, such as the older brother's mediocrity following the mother's departure or the sister's forced independence.

It stops being just another film about loss and transforms into an intimate study of the family structure. Works like this reveal a great deal about how audiences react to confronting art. It is violently necessary to undergo experiences that strip us of our comfort zones: this shapes human beings while simultaneously confusing us and exposing our eternal internal hypocrisy.

When the film decides to invite us into the experience through voice-over, the proposal ceases to be that of an ordinary movie. It becomes a compilation of pieces forming true artistic anarchy—a work that defies industry standards.

The Value of Auteurism in Cinema

There is a fundamental element in this director's cinema: the ability to awaken the desire to always want more. Good films are not merely those that entertain the most or break box-office records. They are the ones that, through their auteurism and individual traits, impel the viewer to deeper understand that universe. It is precisely the quality of the experience that resonates within each person as a unique worldview, and this film is a perfect example of that.

Watching Daughter of the Nile is embarking on a poetic and aesthetically stunning journey. It is understanding that even in harsh reality, we can glimpse perspectives of the future.

The work carries a pessimistic tone, but it does not convey a defeatist message. It presents the flaws of a family and a society only to transform that message into music—translated into simple scenes, like a door swaying in the wind. In the end, the film speaks for itself: it exists as art and pulses as life.

A Poesia do Tempo e a Anarquia Artística em Daughter of the Nile

Daughter of the Nile habita uma encruzilhada complexa.

A Lentidão Expressiva e o Vazio Familiar

A narrativa de Daughter of the Nile é propositalmente cadenciada.

Assistir a Daughter of the Nile é embarcar em uma viagem poética e esteticamente estonteante.

Coming Of Age: an adult fairytale...

 Youth Through the Screen

What can we say about the "coming-of-age" genre?

The Search for Meaning in the Mirror of the Screen

Amidst so many categories, one catches our eye. In a sea of genres and stories—among them, many realities—coming-of-age represents society more than a political drama ever could. But why make such a claim? Well, time is a one-way street: there is no turning back. One day, you are just a child trying to understand why time moves so slowly during school hours; the next, you are writing your first resume; and, in the following moment, you find yourself with a fully formed body—or rather, a body transformed by time.

So, when we sit down to watch a movie about annoying teenagers, we are trying to understand the psyche behind it all. However, there is something rarely mentioned when we bring up teen movies: refusal. That is why we need to go deeper...

Linear Time and the Uncertainties of Youth

The reality of a young person becomes precarious the moment something is missing. This lack does not mean a material absence, but rather a shift in the perception of time. Nevertheless, understanding that time will not bring those days back is also a dangerous realization. The central question is: time may be cyclical after the last beat of blood on the left side of the chest, but reason and uncertainty transform it into something linear. It is a constant notion of farewells, within which a question resides: should we face youth abruptly, or accept that, despite the uncertainties, there is still time left to live?

From a certain point on, youth movies became more delicate, more empathetic. Not because of a sudden rarity within the genre, but because your own view of the world changed. We could cite a chaotic example like The Doom Generation (Gregg Araki), or a more captivating one like The Edge of Seventeen. What matters is not how we state that youth is a crucial stage, but rather emphasizing that there is no "right time" to understand that growing up goes beyond physical changes or natural progression: it deals individually with how trauma affects us.

"You can run, but you can't hide..."

Martyrs, Love, and Growing Up

Time walks a fine line between understanding and punishment. In Lady Bird, her desire is her martyr. Leaving Sacramento seemed like the right choice—and indeed it was—but she didn't expect that time would demand its toll in the form of nostalgia, in the form of love.

Love in youth seems illusory, almost plastic. We spend our time idealizing something that wouldn't be possible even in dreams; however, certain complexities transform its presence during this period into something more than magical: truly poetic. Thus, accepting that not everything presented to us belongs to us is a constant. This constancy ultimately defines who you are at the end of the journey. And as much as it might seem that youth comes to an end, can you name a single reason why a human being should reject this phase?

Therefore, when we talk about limits, youth simply doesn't fit the term.

And, much like in Lady Bird, the idea of coming-of-age speaks far more about maturing within a snapshot of life than across the entirety of it. In other words, it offers a perspective on a crucial chapter, rather than the complete transformation—which remains linear, just like time itself.

The Heroic Journey of Everyday Life

Movies about growing up can also be subtle. I say this referencing a very popular film: Spider-Man (2002).

Peter Parker is a perfect example of this process: suddenly, responsibility catches up with him. He is enchanted by freedom, yet refuses it out of fear. His initiative to become the city's hero is nothing short of a metaphor for becoming the hero of his own life—after all, you are the sole representative of your dream on the face of the Earth.

The facets of being young are endless: countless mistakes, successes, regrets, but ultimately, lessons that will mark us for eternity. It is like imagining a future society with no remaining trace of our existence. It means realizing that, no matter how hard we try, we will never be truly grand.

The Endurance of Youth

Yet, at the epicenter of this text, there are perspectives...

Perhaps 2,000 years from now we will be nothing, but today we are something, we are someone. And that is enough to understand why Lady Bird, Call Me By Your Name, and other examples are so effective when it comes to growing up through cinema. So many people see themselves in these characters in a search for meaning—and isn't that one of the most beautiful inspirations to witness as a human being?

So live young, regardless of how old you are.

Be young, no matter what stage of life you are in.

Intention matters more than perspective, more than any potential mistake. Consequently, others may not remember, but you will.

Lastly, we could have mentioned more than five movies, but that would take the focus away from our main point. We are talking human to human here, and right now, protect your youth. Don't let the thought of finite time bring you down. Movies have taught us something: if everything goes wrong, there will always be someone there to help you. After all, films are based on reality—and in it, we all live...

A Juventude Pelas Telas

A Heroica Jornada do Cotidiano

 The Modern Dilemma:

Is There Genuine Novelty in Cinema Today?

As a brief answer: no! But let’s take a breath: what is contemporary artistic expression?

The Exhaustion of Narratives and the Role of Industry

"Contemporary art" is a broad term used to translate a specific cultural panorama. Within this backdrop, storytelling takes center stage—narratives that naturally reshape themselves as certain ideas fall out of favor; that is, when consuming a form of art yields exhaustion or, better yet, becomes an outdated formula

So, why is there no real innovation? Simple: artistic expression has already been explored to its narrative limits. And we at C&C aren't the only ones saying this—the film industry itself is telling us.

The film market largely began with the fascination of the talkies. Decades passed, giving rise to series, short films, feature-length movies, soap operas, and various approaches to transforming photography into video. However, this medium suffered rapid burnout, largely due to hyperproduction. What occurred was akin to the financial market: an oversupply that demands far beyond what audiences can absorb, creating an iceberg destined to sink. The last to manage to create will become the pioneer of a new generation of formats.

The Need to Protect the Artist's Vision

So, what remains in the wake of this collapse? An even simpler answer: creation in the modern world.

Understand one thing: this text isn't about nostalgia; it’s a reflection on how everything we watch in the year 2026 has already been done in past decades—and yet, it can still hold quality. For that to happen, however, there is a vital need to intellectually safeguard our creators.

Notice that I didn't mention the mode of consumption, but rather how we project a personal vision over the broader context. Therefore, safeguarding the intellect means placing the author above the financial bottom line; shielding the artist so that, upon structures whose potential for expansion we have (superficially) exhausted, it remains possible to infuse a subjective worldview.

With that said, we have examples like River of Grass (Kelly Reichardt), Badlands (Terrence Malick), and the classic Bonnie & Clyde. These are films from different eras, yet they share the same narrative backbone. However, they diverge in the details—such as atmosphere, conversational tone, directorial approach, and, above all, their adaptability to their own time. When we speak of valuing the intellect, we mean: give the work the freedom to exist on its own terms, without forcing it to be something it isn't. In short, preserve the act of the artist truly being an artist...

Narrative versus Commercial Strategy

Now, you might be asking yourself: why haven't we mentioned major productions like Blade Runner 2049 or Villeneuve’s Dune?

The truth is that even these titles are rooted in works from the past. In cinema, they cease to be purely narrative avenues and instead become commercial strategies. What does that mean?

Imagine a packed theater. I'll use my first experience with this mechanism of entertainment: 3D. Today, this technology is viewed as saturated—not necessarily because it's bad, but because the industry was starved for novelty. And so we arrive at our conclusion: if the plot, an essential pillar of cinema, fails to yield expected profits, the mode of exhibition is turned into the main attraction. That was how I saw the first Jurassic World in 3D.

Why is this so harmful? Because they are selling something that ceased to be poetic expression long ago; they are marketing experiences that cinema, in its essence, neither demands nor delivers. It is details like these that belittle both the film and the author in favor of shallow spectacle.

It isn't about how much James Cameron innovated, but about how the market shaped the landscape to a point where even they can no longer control it. What was once a melodramatic experience is now watched in 3D in an unequipped theater, simply because the bond between audience and art has turned into an extremely fragile—yet dependent—relationship, causing the decline of cinematic culture.

Technology as a Tool, Not a Substitute

Are we saying we shouldn't innovate technical resources? No! Technology is the product of a one-in-a-trillion impossibility; after all, we are human beings! However, as incredible as an innovative experience may seem, we are still talking about something that touches beyond the physical: something that enters through the eyes and ears to transform the subconscious. A genuine experience that only humans, among all living beings on our planet, can undergo.

Therefore, we are not against technical evolution in cinema; we are against how we are utilizing it. It is an approach that wears down the creator's image (both of technology and of the seventh art), delaying society's perception of artistic creation—which, in theory, is a mirror of me, you... all of us.

An Invitation to Debate

Ultimately, our goal is to raise questions, present perspectives, and encourage you to offer a counterproposal—a signal!

There is a theory regarding life in the universe known as the "Dark Forest," which posits that numerous civilizations are waiting for someone to take the first step so they can finally reveal themselves. As ironic and peculiar as that may sound, that is our purpose here.

Finally, thank you for reading this far!

PORTUGUÊS:

O Dilema Moderno:

Existe Genuína Novidade no Cinema Atual?

This is not a film critic!

 Blue Heron

Where lies your peace, where do you find your chaos...

Immersion and Metaphor

Let's start differently by understanding a phobia before diving deep into the critique. Thalassophobia is the name given to an intense fear of situations involving the depths of oceans, lakes, or even swimming pools. We begin here to grasp just how metaphorical Blue Heron is, as it carries the complexity of a true immersion.

This immersion is nothing less than its central theme: Jeremy acts as our "ocean," while Sasha is the bearer of this phobia. This brings us to a fundamental question: what is the role of metaphor in cinema?

In film, metaphors act as visual devices that construct new layers of perception—much like breaking the fourth wall. In the case of Blue Heron, there is the perspective of a temporal shift that goes further, aiming to transform this device into an element that adds more facets to its characters.

Shift of Focus and Narrative Courage

Considering a simple structure, the film introduces a group as protagonists but abandons them through a technique of separation. From its midpoint onward, the central focus shifts to a previously introduced figure: the adult Sasha.

However, this choice alone does not guarantee excellence. The work demonstrates value by taking on an act that can be considered bold—or even "presumptuous" to some, and "fantastic" to others. The feature film does not stand out for possessing an unattainable quality, but rather for accepting the risk of being underestimated, something rare in today's industry. But why does Blue Heron contrast so sharply with contemporary cinema?

There is no rigid rule dictating what is good, bad, modern, or outdated, but rather a critical analysis of patterns. The standard of modern cinema prioritizes grandiosity—as seen in recent major releases—whereas in the cinema of Hollywood's Golden Age, the grandiosity of that era equates to the "simple" of our generation. The point is that Blue Heron uses the possibilities of modern storytelling to adapt the style of the past: the temporal shift is applied within a meticulous and subtle narrative, yet done with full awareness. This awareness becomes clear when the film embraces delicate moments, such as Sasha's tears upon reuniting with her childhood self.

An Experience Beyond the Script

After all, what is the film itself?

Imagine a letter. Every letter has an addressee, right? Now imagine a letter without an addressee: that is Blue Heron. The film does not seek to be a traditional three-act story or a hero's journey, but rather an experience.

To test this proposal, try closing your eyes every time you hear the birds and the waves while watching the film. In this raw immersion, you connect with a concept that goes beyond the script. Cinema is not limited to image, sound, and writing; it encompasses feelings, chills, and interpretations. The main thesis of this challenge is to make you feel every fragment of the narrative sensorially. By doing so, your heart rate slows down, and Jeremy's chaos contrasts with the environment, creating a subtle transition into experimentalism.

Memory, Pain, and the Human Psyche

What does Blue Heron bring us, and what does it have to say? A film has no obligation to teach us, but it can foster debates. In this specific case, mental health is the core axis, but the discussion goes further.

When we discuss mental health, we are fundamentally talking about memories. They shape human beings and transform the simple into the complex. It is at this point that individual suffering becomes collective: through empathy, the pain of another punishes—even if unconsciously—everyone around them. Jeremy suffered, but he was not alone in that pain.

From this perspective, his siblings had reasons to harbor resentment, but Sasha, stepping into the protagonist role, transforms this natural anger into welcoming acceptance. She accepts that the past is unchangeable and seeks to give new meaning to that wound, trying to make sense of her own life. After all, what is left to do when the past can no longer be altered?

In light of this, Jeremy was not a bad person; he simply did not understand the complexity of human emotions—emotions that render consciousness inevitable. Pain, in its essence, is nothing more than the processing of reality. Although the character was not extensively developed, a single memory of a friend was enough to give him depth. This reunion serves intentionally as a farewell.

Between Psychological Drama and Horror

The apparent intention of the film might be to deliver a story with a clear beginning, middle, and end; but from a broader perspective, what it presents is a character study focused on just two figures: Sasha and Jeremy. Although it flirts with social drama, Blue Heron establishes itself as a psychological drama with a strong pull toward horror.

This thesis relies on the very definition of the genre: horror is everything that causes discomfort and unease stemming from fear. So when Jeremy threatens to burn down his house, we get a strong indication that the film itself is a complex arrangement of farewells. In short, a very pleasant surprise!

Blue Heron

Onde jaz a tua paz, onde encontras o teu caos...

A Imersão e a Metáfora

Memória, Dor e a Psique Humana

How do you use your time?

 Is There Still Time?

The Modern Relationship Between Consumerism and the (De)valuation of Time

As inappropriate as it may seem, we need to talk about time. Time is a relative measure; it passes as we age, as the decay of the living being matures and transforms. And to be a person, to pulse with life in its natural state, is a scarcity. I say this because we are surrounded by a routine, monotonous lifestyle, and in relation to that, what is "success"?

Success ends up being the use of time outside of necessity, outside of the essential. In other words, it is the financial power to have acquisition as a range of options — such as travel, cell phones, video games —, everything that will complement and fill the void that your time, in the midst of success, will occupy. Therefore, when we talk about art, we talk about consumerism; and if we talk about consumerism, we automatically talk about time. So I ask you: how have you been spending your time?

Cinema as a Trajectory and Transformation

But our field is not just about questioning, of course, because here we talk about cinema! So, what kind of works have you been spending your time on? Or rather, do you feel satisfied respecting your individuality when you watch a movie?

The central idea is not to judge the good from the bad, but rather to question and make you think about how fleeting life is, making knowledge obvious. Because yes, cinema is a form of knowledge; it is a gentle way of telling you that, even though it might seem like a hobby or just two hours of entertainment, it will become part of your trajectory on Earth. You will never consume a work of art and leave "unscathed": there will be a thousand and one reasons for that movie to transform you, whether for better or for worse. So let's go deeper, and let's ask ourselves the following question: what movie changed your life?

From my perspective, Christiane F.. Christiane F. is a dark but very real movie about the drug crisis in Germany, portraying the story of Christiane herself, which transformed me as a person. This happens not because of the technique, not because of the quality of the script, but because of the empathy that warms the heart of every human being, like you and me. And that is why I ask you again: how much is your time worth?

The Race Against the Clock

The value of time is not measured, it is felt. One ordinary day you are playing with your friend during school recess, the next you are in high school, the next preparing your first resume, and finally, you realize you will only be satisfied if you reach retirement — because then we will have time, but we won't be the same anymore. So the question comes back to haunt us: how much is your time worth?

Do you see how society is unfair to all of us, except for those who hold the power of consumption? In other words, we give ourselves away our entire lives in search of an ideal that doesn't exist. We are always behind time, running in search of it, when, in fact, it is the one chasing us, attracting us, and betraying us, without even questioning if it's what we deserve...

The Intimacy of Rewatching

But speaking of cinema, what have you been watching? Have these movies been just to "pass the time" or are they actually meaning something to you?

Recently I watched some series, which is rare for me, and I talked about them. But that's not exactly what I want to bring up, but rather how stepping out of my cinematic comfort zone brought me a certain out-of-the-ordinary experience, like it was to rewatch Normal People. And take note of the word "rewatch", because I knew what was going to happen, but there were reasons that drew me back to Marianne and Connell's story, and those reasons gave value to those hours — something that a movie from a franchise like The Purge wouldn't have.

And today you must be noticing how personal this text is, more intimate. And yes, it is intentional, because we are talking about an experience that, whether we like it or not, is collective. For example, the society of 1900 no longer exists, just as we won't exist when our future generations are in 2200. And even though it might seem sad, isn't it beautiful? To portray time is to understand that not everything is about feeling satisfied, but about feeling like you belong, feeling valued. So here is our last time asking: how much is your time worth?

Conclusion: The Logic of Life

And finally, we have reached the end of our text... Although relative, time still hurts, it still leaves us longing. And that is why we are human beings: desires, flesh, and bone. The rational mind is shaped to tone us down, to reduce our interests and peculiarities so that we don't feel time passing, when we should, indeed, understand that, like it or not, we are in the paradox of "one more / one less day of life". And as morbid as that may sound, we are a society that doesn't see time pass because there is a lack of love in our daily lives.

Clichés exist for a reason: to redefine dignity, to remind us of what life is made of. So, despite trying hard to express the logic of time, our conclusion today is: there is no logic in time, but there is logic in life.

So, where our key question would fit, I leave an answer: our time is valid wherever we are happy and practicing what truly matters. And, as I said at the beginning, just like time, this too is and always will be relative...

To finish, I hope our text has been a good addition to your time!

A Corrida Contra o Relógio

A Intimidade do Reassistir
