Someone who does not recognize themselves before society as a worthy citizen, as an ordinary person, a family member, or a friend, but mainly as someone who barely understands what occurred while the world went on living as usual; yet for you, it was a trance.

Nelly lived a trance that many people lived, but she survived. At certain moments in the film, we can notice why Nelly feels displaced, because even surviving, even traumatized, German and global society did not know what guilt, pain, and, above all, the responsibility of restoring an entire group that was the victim of a real genocide meant. Therefore, when we talk about identity in Phoenix, we are not grouping a social class or an ethnic class, but rather people who were completely annihilated. There was no longer peace for those who suffered through the Holocaust, but Nelly, even while being part of a group that didn't even have anywhere to go, was still seeking the understanding directed by the State—that is, a congruent perspective on seeing herself inserted back into the "enemy camp."

Trauma and Character Study

Still, Phoenix is not a movie about the Holocaust. Indeed, it addresses the Holocaust and Nazism, but it is not centered on these themes.

Phoenix is a character study. Thus, when identity is put to the test, we must understand that its characters are a list of characteristics that generalize the entire context of that historical period.

Nevertheless, the film addresses other themes, such as the aforementioned betrayal.

Losing trust is a playful act, as it is entirely fictional. But when we cite Phoenix, what remains for Nelly if not to give herself a second chance?

The complexity of this film reveals itself even more as a matter of adaptation when Johnny's character is introduced, and consequently, manipulation.

Petzold is a director who defines the structure of his films very well, with them being a constant dramatic scale, where his films are built around a single situation. But why highlight this?

Because when cinema emerges as a dramatic act, its complexity is centralized in details that, over the decades, become increasingly meticulous. An example of this is Phoenix: when compared to classics like Fritz Lang's Metropolis, we see that the critiques are essentially structural regarding society, but they employ different methods in terms of provocation—which, historically, demonstrates an "evolution" (better described as fragmentation) compared to past decades.

So we finish: what to take away from Phoenix?

The world itself is something beautiful, complex, lots of plants, lots of animals... But lots of ideas.

Ideas move every continent, their differences and similarities, but, in theory, we are a single organic foundation that keeps the biosphere going. So, when Phoenix decides to dissect human evil, we must sit down, process, and reflect: am I just one more among billions, or can I still live by my own will?

And when we realize it, our perspective on life coexists with many others. There will still be people dying because of ego, people living for good, people who stay within the norm... But all of them are people.

It is not about being good or bad, but about understanding that your complexity is not a rule for another person's complexity, and vice versa. However, it is about living, about breathing, and seeing that Phoenix was real, just like Metropolis, but there are still many The Perks of Being a Wallflower, a few Almost Famous. In other words: the identity that Nelly lost, we, as a society, must give her the opportunity to recover. To recover her dignity, and to make human social life increasingly understanding and less aggressive. The world is still the world at the end of the day...

A primeira vez que vi Phoenix (2014) foi em 2022. Foi um filme devastador, mas que não tive a maturidade para absorver a carga emocional. E falo isso para recomendar algo: assista a esse filme com a mente de uma pessoa que não se reconhece. Não se reconhece perante a sociedade como um cidadão digno, como uma pessoa comum, um familiar ou amigo, mas principalmente alguém que pouco compreende o que ocorreu enquanto o mundo vivia comumente; porém, para ti, era um transe.

Nelly viveu um transe que muitas pessoas viveram, mas ela sobreviveu. Em certos momentos do filme, podemos notar o porquê de Nelly se sentir deslocada, pois mesmo sobrevivendo, mesmo traumatizada, a sociedade alemã e global não sabia o que era a culpa, a dor e, principalmente, a responsabilidade de restaurar todo um grupo que fora vítima de um real genocídio. Portanto, quando falamos de identidade em Phoenix, estamos agrupando não uma classe social, uma classe étnica, mas sim pessoas que foram totalmente aniquiladas. Não existia mais paz para aqueles que sofreram com o Holocausto, mas Nelly, mesmo fazendo parte do grupo que não tinha sequer para onde ir, ainda buscava a compreensão direcionada pelo Estado, ou seja, uma perspectiva congruente sobre se ver inserida novamente no "campo inimigo".

O trauma e o estudo de personagem

Ainda assim, Phoenix não é um filme sobre o Holocausto. De fato, aborda o Holocausto e o Nazismo, mas não é centrado nesses temas.

Phoenix é um estudo de personagem. Sendo assim, quando a identidade é posta à prova, temos que entender que seus personagens são uma lista de características que generalizam todo o contexto sobre a fase histórica.

Temos então uma pergunta: o que acontece após o trauma?

Essa é uma pergunta que demarca épocas na história. Na época da resolução da 2ª Guerra Mundial, o trauma seria apenas um apagamento histórico. É o que acontece com Nelly, que é forçada a viver com números no pulso, com pessoas que a traíram, mas nunca vista como um ser humano que viveu o inferno na Terra.

Porém, o que é o pós-trauma em 2026?

Hoje em dia, a percepção de uma situação traumática é tida como um transtorno psicológico que, com o profissional certo, seria uma conjuntura de tratamentos para a readaptação da vítima à sociedade. Contudo, temos exemplos reais de que a sociedade não evoluiu conforme os traumas e as vítimas do Holocausto esperavam, com uma crescente de guerras por todo o mundo e uma operação de soberania constante quando falamos de política.

Traição, manipulação e linguagem cinematográfica

Entretanto, o filme aborda outros temas, tais quais a já citada traição.

Perder a confiança é um ato lúdico, pois é totalmente fictício. Mas quando citamos Phoenix, o que resta à Nelly senão se dar uma segunda chance?

A complexidade desse filme se mostra ainda mais uma questão de adaptação quando o personagem de Johnny é apresentado e, consequentemente, a manipulação.

Petzold é um diretor que define muito bem a estrutura de seus filmes, sendo eles uma escala dramática constante, onde seus filmes se constroem a partir de uma única situação. Mas por que destacar isso?

Pois quando o cinema surge como um ato dramático, sua complexidade é centralizada em detalhes que, conforme o passar das décadas, se tornam cada vez mais minuciosos. O exemplo disso é Phoenix, que, comparado a clássicos como Metropolis, de Fritz Lang, vemos que as críticas são essencialmente estruturais em relação à sociedade, mas possuem métodos diferentes em relação à sua provocação — o que, historicamente, demonstra uma "evolução" (mais bem colocada como fragmentação) em relação a décadas passadas.

Então, quando Phoenix decide destrinchar a maldade humana, temos que sentar-nos, processar e refletir: seria eu mais um em meio aos bilhões, ou ainda posso viver por minhas vontades?

E quando nos damos conta, a nossa perspectiva de vida ainda vive com outras diversas. Ainda terão pessoas morrendo por conta de ego, pessoas vivendo pelo bem, pessoas que estão no padrão... Mas todas são pessoas.

Não é sobre ser bom ou ruim, mas sobre entender que a sua complexidade não é regra para a complexidade do outro, e vice-versa. Contudo, é sobre viver, sobre respirar e ver que Phoenix foi real, assim como Metropolis, mas ainda existem muitas As Vantagens de Ser Invisível, alguns Quase Famosos. Ou seja: a identidade que Nelly perdeu, como sociedade, nós temos que dar a oportunidade de ela recuperar. Recuperar sua dignidade e fazer com que o social humano seja cada vez mais compreensivo e cada vez menos agressivo. O mundo ainda é mundo no final do dia...

Em uma sociedade capitalista, a estrutura humana coletiva revela traços autodestrutivos. Um dos principais exemplos disso é a forma como os governos mundiais operam através de sucessivas gestões. Contudo, seria raso lançar essa informação sem associá-la ao audiovisual: o setor se renova por novos nomes e por promessas de um futuro superior ao anterior. No entanto, ao analisar a fundo essas propostas, nota-se que o problema nunca foi a cabeça criativa, mas sim o método estabelecido desde o início. Com isso, a projeção nunca foi o entrave; o que de fato atrapalha a engrenagem é o próprio sistema.

A Falsa Inovação e o Alívio da Realidade

Centrando o olhar no audiovisual, vê-se um setor que se renova de forma ilusória. Um exemplo disso foi The Irishman, de Martin Scorsese, vendido à época como uma grande inovação. De fato, a tecnologia de rejuvenescimento foi disruptiva, mas não inédita; a indústria vendeu a perspectiva de uma revolução que, na prática, não se concretizou — gerando, ao contrário, o famoso efeito do "vale da estranheza".

Mas como as expectativas são implantadas se as falhas do sistema são tão perceptíveis?

Os sonhos são formas de enxergar o mundo; um modo de ver as coisas que torna a realidade um pouco menos violenta. É como colocar um band-aid em um machucado: não cura, mas alivia. Assim, quando surge a oportunidade de sonhar, alimenta-se a esperança de que nossa visão de mundo significará algo perante a realidade. Disso deriva uma nova questão: qual é o papel do artista nesse meio?

Regardless of authorship, the true face of humanity and its integration into centuries-old dialogues will be embodied by the content created, not by who created it.

Take the Bible, for instance. We can theorize about thousands of angles that explain the existence of a dogma, but let us focus on what matters for this reflection: the act of creation. The Bible itself reveals little about its exact origins. Historical contextualizations do exist, but the work is so landmark that, in the 21st century, it comes down to different versions of a single story where common knowledge cannot uniformly or logically pinpoint who actually wrote its first line.

It follows, then, that over the years we hold onto memories of the works far more than of the artists themselves. But why does this happen?

The Transience of the Market and Contemporary Cinema

What pulses with life is not the heart, but what it has experienced. Following this logic, the way people expressed themselves in ancient works was vastly different from today. Nowadays, with the market at the center of creation, productions carry not only standardization but also an expiration date.

A clear example of this is superhero movies. Take Batman, a classic hero: after various cinematic iterations, at the end of a cycle, previous interpretations seem to be discarded—not for a lack of quality, but due to an innovation deemed 'necessary and functional.' It is the natural turnover of a product that, even if not obsolete, is viewed by the market as having a limited shelf life.

Thus, we can follow a new line of reasoning: the reason why novelty does not necessarily have to be stylistic.

The Cost of the Machine and the Burden on the Viewer

What is a work of art? A cinematic work essentially consists of the act of filming an image. But we must understand how this simple concept evolved into terms like 'mainstream' and high-budget blockbusters.

It all started when cinema was born: it is no exaggeration to say that, from its earliest moments, this art form was destined to become a market tool. However, there were natural technical limitations that left more room for simple narratives. The point is not to adopt a stance of nostalgia or martyrdom regarding technology, but to observe that, through the exaltation of the modern, an idea took hold that any work requires an exorbitant budget to be relevant.

Faced with this, you might ask: what is the harm in that?

Naturally, art becomes more expensive, and the audience foots the bill. So, in addition to dealing with an extremely costly market, we must cope with an accelerated pace of consumption that leaves us without enough time to appreciate what is being produced. There is no 'villain' in how a movie is made, but there is a method that leaves viewers feeling increasingly demeaned, both morally and financially.

The Invisible Workforce and the Ethics of Viewing

How does cinema view itself in the face of all this? It is poetic to think of cinema as a living organism—and it truly is, not because it possesses a mind of its own, but because it is composed mainly of an invisible workforce. I am referring to the people who dedicate years of their lives for a single opportunity: not renowned directors like Nolan or Scorsese, but technical crews, third-party companies, and niche workers.

These workers wait years to be seen, only to be forgotten a year and a half after a release because current cinema treats everything as disposable. Cinema is a collective art form that requires countless lives to transform an embryonic idea into a finished piece. Therefore, when we say that a film is a memory, we are speaking not just of its aesthetic quality, but of our duty to acknowledge those who worked to bring it to life.

There is an ethical dimension to film analysis precisely for this reason. It is within this perspective that we find why we must study cinema through its industry and its marginalized voices.

The Critique of Overproduction and the Future of Art

When we address cinema as memory, we speak of time, fatigue, and dedication. That is why it feels uncomfortable to see Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man sidelined in favor of newer iterations—valued not just for technical quality, but through provocative comparisons with what came before. This comparison does not feel constructive; rather, it hollows out the past.

The relativization of time suffocates creativity. Yet, through study and critical reflection, we have reason to believe that the market will eventually have to self-regulate. In time, it will realize that the sustainable path lies in investing in and valuing the artistic process itself, rather than reducing cinema to an assembly line of hyper-production driven by the American Way of Life.

A filosofia manifesta-se no olhar singular de cada indivíduo sobre a realidade — um ideal no qual interações cotidianas deixam de ser meras repetições automáticas. Portanto, vale a pena buscar um olhar mais reflexivo para o cotidiano e explorar territórios aos quais a rotina comum costuma fechar as portas, pois a ciência e a filosofia continuam a estudar o ser humano em todas as suas dimensões, internas e externas.

The Invitation to Question and the Viewer's Journey

Let’s get straight to the point: why is the end the beginning?

When we start watching a movie, it is natural to ask ourselves at some point: "where is this going?". Most of the time, this question is more than necessary—it is intrinsic. I say this because, while watching Esteros (2016), I questioned the characters' journey and their conclusion. At first, that sparked my interest in the film, which shifted my perspective on how I consumed the work itself. But the most interesting part was yet to come: what does the end of a movie truly mean?

The end of every cycle is the beginning of a new one: a new perspective, a new lesson—in other words, a new beginning. So, from the moment cinema invites you to question the why of things, it is gradually placing you back into a position you were already in! Or rather: from the moment you allow yourself to question a movie or its ending, you are necessarily going beyond the narrative. In that moment, your imagination flows and takes you far away from the work; but in the minutes you find yourself paying attention to it again, you return to the cycle of "where is this going?". Consequently, the very factor that made you lose focus is what brings you back to your goal. We then return to another question: how long is the end really the end?

The Echo of Art and the Permanence of the Work

Works of art as a whole do not have endings, but rather character arcs.

Character arcs are the first association we make because they are the core of the film—what actually happens in the narrative. Therefore, we get the impression that when the credits roll, the movie ends. But let’s go deeper...

When we consume music, we go through three stages: discerning the melody, assimilating the lyrics, and finally, experiencing the work as a whole. However, it does not end there. Somewhere on the planet, someone is singing it, and that is the cool part about analyzing a work after its end: the echo. This echo is a transmutation, an active perspective that the end does not always mean the outcome. This is not just a subjective viewpoint, it is a fact: as long as there is someone in the world propagating what the work preaches, the end will not be the end.

The Illusion of the Period in Cinema

So then, when do we define the end?

We don't.

The end is a stage; as we said, endings are cycles. Consequently, we tend to seek resolution in everything that surrounds us, which is often premature.

In cinema specifically, a movie is not proposed to have an end: it will have a stopping point. This invites us to reflect on a striking characteristic: what happens to the characters after the end?

To use a concrete example, the ending of Vincent Gallo's The Brown Bunny (2003) is devastating, but thinking about what comes next for Bud is even worse. This melancholic air makes the film's echo sound much more narrative than strictly real. The story itself is whimsical in its absurdities; however, the idea that the character had to move on somehow stimulates what many screenwriters see as a narrative exercise—that is, using creativity to build an entire universe.

Social Numbness and the Artistic "Self"

Taking a somewhat pessimistic view, this practice exposes a society that is not ready to consume and spread creativity. But why do I draw this conclusion? Take any movie theater, with any movie: people are not there to have an experience (a reflection of an outdated and retrogressive film market), but rather to escape. This posture reflects the lack of a perception that human beings naturally possess: the artistic personality.

The artistic personality is part of the consciousness of human beings as... human beings! Or rather: society extracts the best from us when it comes to being functional, but it is limited when it comes to stimulating creativity, the artistic "self."

The Paradox of the End

Therefore, the encouragement of creativity is something that is born with us and stays with us entirely, stemming from concepts so individual that every human being alive on planet Earth right now could build their own worldview through art. That being said, is the end of art the end of humanity?

Probably yes.

The end of humanity is directly linked to the end of art (and vice versa). As long as that doesn't happen, we can reflect: is the end really the end?

The answer varies, but it will come back...

And when it returns, you will ask yourself if your end is directly linked to the end of what you consume, what you reproduce, and above all, what you practice in your daily life. We are the ones who create the end and, for now, we can conclude that the end of eternity also has an end—meaning, our paradox of the end that has no end would also constitute... the end!

O convite ao questionamento e a jornada do espectador

Vamos direto ao assunto: por que o fim é o início?

Quando iniciamos um filme, é natural pensarmos em algum momento da obra: "onde isso vai dar?". Na maioria das vezes, essa pergunta é mais do que necessária — é intrínseca. Falo isso pois, assistindo a Esteros (2016), me questionei sobre a jornada dos personagens e sua conclusão. Em um primeiro momento, aquilo despertou meu interesse no filme, algo que mudou minha perspectiva de consumo da própria obra. Mas o mais interessante ainda estava por vir: o que, de verdade, significa o fim de um filme?

O fim de todo ciclo é o início de um novo: uma nova visão, um novo ensinamento, ou seja, um novo começo. Então, a partir do momento em que o cinema te convida a questionar o porquê das coisas, ele está te recolocando gradualmente na posição em que você já estava! Ou melhor dizendo: a partir do momento em que você se permite questionar sobre um filme ou sobre o final dele, você está necessariamente indo além da narrativa. Nesse momento, sua imaginação flui e te leva para longe da obra; mas, nos minutos em que você se pega novamente dando atenção a ela, você retorna ao ciclo do "onde isso vai dar?". Consequentemente, o mesmo fator que te fez se perder é aquele que vai te trazer de volta ao seu objetivo. Voltamos, então, a outra pergunta: até quando o fim é o fim?

O eco da arte e a permanência da obra

Obras de arte como um todo não possuem finais, mas sim arcos.

Arcos de personagens são a primeira associação que fazemos por serem o cerne do filme, aquilo que de fato acontece na narrativa. Portanto, temos a impressão de que, quando os créditos sobem, o filme acaba. Mas vamos mais a fundo...

Quando consumimos uma música, passamos por três estágios: o discernimento da melodia, a assimilação da letra e, enfim, a obra como um todo. Contudo, ela não acaba aí. Em algum lugar do planeta, alguém está cantando-a, e essa é a parte legal de analisar uma obra após o seu fim: o eco. Esse eco é uma transmutação, uma perspectiva vigente de que nem sempre o fim significa o término. Isso não é apenas uma perspectiva subjetiva, é um fato: enquanto existir alguém no mundo propagando o que a obra prega, o fim não será o fim.

A ilusão do ponto final no cinema

Mas então, quando definimos o fim?

Não definimos.

O fim é um estágio; como dissemos, finais são ciclos. Consequentemente, tendemos a buscar resoluções em tudo o que nos cerca, o que muitas vezes é precipitado.

No cinema, especificamente, um filme não é proposto para ter um fim: ele terá um ponto de parada. Isso nos convida a refletir sobre uma característica marcante: o que acontece com os personagens após o fim?

Usando um exemplo concreto, o final de The Brown Bunny (2003), de Vincent Gallo, é destruidor, mas pensar no que vem depois para Bud é ainda pior. Esse ar melancólico faz com que o eco do filme soe muito mais narrativo do que propriamente real. A história em si é lúdica pelos absurdos; no entanto, a ideia de que o personagem teve de seguir em frente de algum jeito estimula o que muitos roteiristas enxergam como exercício narrativo — isto é, o uso da criatividade para construir um universo inteiro.

A anestesia social e o "eu" artístico

Tendo uma visão um pouco pessimista, essa prática expõe uma sociedade que não está pronta para consumir e propagar a criatividade. Mas por qual razão trago essa conclusão? Pegue uma sala de cinema qualquer, com um filme qualquer: as pessoas não estão ali para ter uma experiência (retrato de um mercado cinematográfico ultrapassado e retrógrado), mas sim para ter uma fuga. Essa postura reflete a falta de uma percepção que o ser humano possui naturalmente: a personalidade artística.

A personalidade artística faz parte da consciência do ser humano enquanto... ser humano! Ou melhor dizendo: a sociedade extrai o melhor de nós quando o assunto é ser funcional, mas é limitada quando falamos de estimular a criatividade, o "eu" artístico.

O paradoxo do fim

Portanto, o estímulo à criatividade é algo que nasce conosco e nos acompanha integralmente, partindo de conceitos tão individuais que todo ser humano vivo no planeta Terra neste momento conseguiria construir sua própria visão de mundo através da arte. Sendo assim, será que o fim da arte é o fim do ser humano?

Provavelmente sim.

O fim do ser humano está diretamente ligado ao fim da arte (e vice-versa). Enquanto isso não ocorre, podemos refletir: o fim é mesmo o fim?

A resposta varia, mas ela vai voltar...

E quando voltar, você irá se perguntar se o seu fim está diretamente ligado ao fim daquilo que você consome, do que reproduz e, principalmente, daquilo que pratica no seu dia a dia. Somos nós que fazemos o fim e, no momento, podemos concluir que o fim da eternidade também possui um fim — ou seja, o nosso paradoxo do fim que não possui um fim também constituiria... o fim!

Humanity lacks visions. Among them, the gaze of Hou Hsiao-Hsien stands out.

When we speak of art, we inevitably speak of the world. In addressing the world, we deal with experiences—and individual experience, in theory, is also collective. Daughter of the Nile inhabits a complex crossroads. The film does not stand out by being methodical or schematic, but by depicting daily life in a raw, unvarnished way. Unmercifully, the director extracts the maximum from his characters' routines. Within this cycle, the poetry of existing emerges: the act of living as time passes.

This text will not address the film in its entirety, but rather a specific fragment.

Youth as a Remnant and the Aesthetics of Absence

In a certain scene, a brief reflection arises on the passage of time in relation to youth. The passage ignites the flame of nostalgia, immediately transporting us to personal memories of adolescence. Even if you do not feel part of that scene, it comes to belong to you. Whether you want it to or not, the scene triggers you through the unique perspective of missing something—the absence.

Now absent, youth becomes a point of no return. In this particular film, it comes to be seen as a remnant—not in the sense of "now we are adults and have to work," but as temporal losses that affected memories and, consequently, identity itself.

In dialoguing with the idea of wasted time, the film invests, conversely, in the narrative of belonging to one's own reality. However, no character fully inhabits their present. This is most evident in the grandfather, whose lack of hope and degradation are exposed as he squanders all his money on gambling. Hou Hsiao-Hsien chooses mental isolation as a narrative torture.

Frames, Static Camera, and the Color of Reality

The camera is cinema's primary tool, but on its own, it does nothing. Understanding images requires creativity, alongside the transposition of the reality that will become a film. Regardless of whether the work is realistic or not, there comes a moment in the projection where the image inevitably takes on frames.

These frames define the crucial aesthetics of the piece. Here, we encounter a static camera: it does not move frantically, nor does it seek easy spectacle. Yet, in harmony with the narrative, the director's choices elevate the film from a mere cult title to something memorable.

It is not about making the most beautiful film, but about embellishing reality—or rather, understanding that while there is color in daily life, there is also the black of darkness and the paleness of gray.

Expressive Slowness and the Familial Void
