To Understand or to Feel?

 To Understand or to Feel?

A little about intention vs. interpretation

Today, while watching The Terrorizers, I came across a sensation I hadn't felt in a long time: the recognition of narrative inertia. What I mean is that when a film has the concept of being disruptive, the ideal would be to understand not only the obvious (such as the script), but also the conceptual through a single fragmentation – in this case, the cinematography. In other words, without further ado, I didn't understand the film's proposal beyond the concept of being intentionally a film based on inertia.

Inertia is a common proposal in Asian films, particularly those centered in countries like China, Taiwan, and Japan, because the conceptual art of these countries is historically realistic – for example, Yasujiro Ozu and Tsai Ming-liang. And what is more realistic than the monotonous? That being said, The Terrorizers is a proposal that I didn't enjoy. Technically, it's an extremely creative and bold film that truly invests in the concept of being static and aesthetic. However, parallel narratives are not something that appeals to me. But let's try to understand why intention differs so much from interpretation...

Interpretation in cinema

When we talk about interpretation in cinema, we talk about an avalanche of ideas. A film is not born from just one idea, but from a ramification of a concept, which encompasses thousands of others, consequently generating thousands more. However, people who prefer linear narratives may feel challenged when encountering a film with plural narratives, which is very good! But our focus here is to use a single experience to explore a debate.

I did feel challenged, I felt entertained, but this experience was not pleasant, nor did I feel ready to criticize it. And this is common!

Understanding the work

To understand when a film is comprehended, we need to have a fixed idea: the intention of a work does not exist from the moment it is exposed to the world. "So you're saying there's no way to understand the work?" Exactly! There are no right or wrong interpretations, only ramifications of details. The influences for an interpretation come directly from individual experiences – for example, when an actor watches a film they were part of. We don't need much to understand that the experience is different.

The concept, then, is about rationalizing what we watch. For example, the concept of The Terrorizers is to understand that the aesthetic is indeed lukewarm. The film won't invite you to be frenetic action or intense drama, but rather a kind of puzzle. A true example of this is the moment when the writer finds her inspiration elsewhere, analogically analyzing a literal puzzle piece that fit into another piece. Therefore, the concept is much more about fitting what you saw into a rationalization than necessarily understanding what you saw.

Without understanding, there is no critique

Now, I want to get to a sensitive topic: without understanding, we have no critique. What does that mean? You cannot express a critical opinion without understanding what you've consumed. Is it possible? Yes, it is. But it's not in good taste, depending on who we are and who we are writing for. I could come here and speak very badly of the film and the reasons why I didn't enjoy the experience, but that's really not the concept of C&C. And I bring here a different view from criticism itself: there are no rules for watching or consuming a work of art, but there is an ethics in sharing an ill-founded opinion.

What should I prioritize: understanding or intentionality?

Returning to our topic with the central question: what should I prioritize, understanding or intentionality? Neither!

The priority when watching a film is like a straight line. During the experience, this line will curve. Nevertheless, it will eventually end, and this experience, in the end, will ask you one single thing: what did you think? And in that answer, you will have both understanding and intentionality, which will technically tell you much more than necessary.

Consumption anxiety

To conclude, let's bring up another point: anxiety. Currently, we have many cases of consumption anxiety, whether with Instagram reels, films, books, or even games. This anxiety causes false comprehension, because within it lives the cognitive ellipsis.

The cognitive ellipsis is a blackout moment. In the theory and practice of our subject, it is a lapse of anxiety so great that, instead of consuming the content itself, the person is consuming what comes after. That is, they treat as an obligation what should be akin to a teaching, an – I repeat – experience.

Conclusion

Ultimately, understanding a film and its intention is still not the most important thing in the world. It's about reading between the lines, admiring another person's work, and living a new experience every second. Perhaps for some people this view might be important, but believe me: for the majority, it is not! Therefore, there is no reason to have this anxiety, to generate something to satisfy and prove a "completed task."

It's like a life philosophy where the theme is: don't take life so seriously. Thus, the idea that remains is the inertia of The Terrorizers, a film that invites you to absorb, but if you don't, the film won't "haunt you"...

Interpretação no cinema

Compreender a obra

A ansiedade do consumo
