Cinema as a whole
The fruit of French cinema, how it begins, and why it is so important.
Let's get straight to the point: French cinema is not only a protective mantle for global cinema but also the reference when it comes to auteur cinema.
Beginning and importance
French cinema does not begin with the Lumière brothers, but rather with the internal revolution of how art was seen by society. What does that mean? French cinema is a point of view apart from the world, and this stands out in the 1960s, when names like Jean-Luc Godard begin to emerge. The correct point is not "when," but rather "why," and with that we have the true question of this text: why French cinema?
Cinema as market vs. literary art
Seeing cinema as a market is a natural movement of human beings – it's not criminal or punitive – but it is at this point that France diverges from the rest of the "world," when it sees in cinema something as powerful as literature. And from this arises a recurring characteristic of local art: the marriage between literature and cinema. And unlike the names mentioned, I want to highlight one in particular: Jean Cocteau and his La Belle et la Bête: a classic adapted.
French singularity
At this point in the French chronology, we find certain dystopias in relation to the world, as if, in fact, there were something different about France, something that walked much more alongside the narrative of novelists than alongside arts produced in Japan and the USA, where the story was much more about telling something new for the sake of bringing novelty – for example, Banshun by Ozu. These are stories that, although complex and objective, did not possess the "lyrical I" that France presented boldly. It is as if there were a world inside France, and in that world, at the exact moment when global reality was heading in one direction, in that country, in the home of the Eiffel Tower, something told that mode of expression to go the opposite way. And then we arrive at the main phase: the Nouvelle Vague.
What was the Nouvelle Vague?
"Nouvelle Vague" is a term used worldwide to define narrative revolt movements in cinema, including the Brazilian, Chinese, and others. However, France appropriated the term because, undeniably, the idea of market revolution was precisely to go against the market. Here we can cite great names beyond Godard, such as Agnès Varda, Jacques Demy, François Truffaut, Rivette, among others. But citing names without proper knowledge gets us nowhere. So, what was the French Nouvelle Vague?
It was everything, it was nothing... In this period, what truly mattered was what the author wanted to do. In an interview on some ordinary day in Paris, Godard was asked whether he would ever like to make big-budget films, since his were very low-budget. He says yes! On the other hand – and this is an important aside – he replies that when a film has a large budget, it ceases to be auteur cinema and starts to encompass much more the source of the investment (investors and producers) than necessarily the director's will. This point of Godard's becomes emblematic because it contains not only the voices of the Nouvelle Vague but also society's view of cinema itself, being the beginning of the current market, which indeed seeks much more the sale of a potential film than necessarily what the film is. That is why, when we talk about the market, France truly stands out: it received the necessary attention, unlike emerging and underdeveloped countries. So, when we speak of importance, yes, France had many merits, but it was not the only country that adopted this view of what auteur cinema was. Therefore, through globalization, we today have an in-depth knowledge of various global cinematographic movements, but back then, France was, and deserved, the spotlight!

Disruptive narratives and Le Gai Savoir
Another idea to bring into the text is how the pluralization of narratives brought increasingly disruptive and postmodern works to the era, and among so many others, I highlight the film Le Gai Savoir by Godard. Le Gai Savoir is an experimental film about the socialist ideal, where students are observed doing... nothing! They literally sit and rehearse ideas about society, which reveals an idea that did not become mature – or, to put it better, to the naked eye.
This first impression is the preliminary step in Godard's more playful works, where he uses this device of pre-finalization, of idealizing something, filtering minimally, and filming only the part about idealizing. However, this idea falls into a certain paradox: what did Godard actually idealize?
Godard as the face of French cinema
Godard was a more than complex figure: as a person, a visionary young man; as an artist, an egocentric. This does not make him a bad human being, but it makes him the face of French cinema to this day, because he had the necessary personality to sustain a whole revolution in art.
Conclusion: France as the home of cinema
In short, French cinema is much larger than snippets. We have parallel, urban names who passed through the country and did not stay, yet left their mark. France, in the end, deserves to be looked upon with a certain nostalgia by cinephiles: it is a crucial stage for anyone who wants to understand cinema. Despite everything, it is still the home of cinema!

A singularidade francesa
Narrativas disruptivas e Le Gai Savoir
