What is the value of your tears?

How Much Is a Tear Worth?
The Melancholy of The Girl Who Cried Pearls

What Can You Do in 20 Minutes?

This question might sound silly when we talk about real life. After all, 20 minutes in a person's daily routine barely covers the time for a lunch break. And it is precisely within this span that short films reside. But let's not talk about the genre in general; this text, by the way, might be shorter than what you're used to reading here at C&C.

The Fear That Money Reveals

The Girl Who Cried Pearls brought me the feeling of fear. Not the common fear, of monsters and phobias, but the fear of humanity toward itself. What, in fact, is money?

Money is a value that is rarely debated — not only because it dictates the world, but because it confronts the morality of living in a society that, in theory, practices social cannibalism. In other words, that young girl's tears were worth more than her heart, more than her pain. And the young man tried to refuse this ethical breach, but in a world where cruelty prevails, where does empathetic reality lie?

It does not exist. There is no world where human beings truly see themselves in another's pain, or at least try to do so. It is like reinterpreting a perspective that never even existed.

The Normalization of Pain

Imagine with me how many car accidents occur on a daily basis. Now rethink how many of them are treated as mere incidents, simply because they get lost in the tangle of bad news that society generates.

This is a normalization of pain that does not align with religious commandments, with psychological principles, or even with the group nature of human beings — after all, we are the only collective animal that systematically refuses to help one another.

The Value of a Tear

And at this point, we can delve a little deeper into the short film and return to the question in the title: how much is a tear worth?

Tears are a curvature close to the human gaze. They are the declaration that something significant has been born, receiving reasons for which emotion — as natural as it is beautiful — exceeded the rationality of the brain. In other words, tears are an involuntary movement. And this movement is the perception of something beyond the ordinary, something that pulls us out of our comfort zone, whether positively or negatively. It is relative.

A Stop-Motion Masterpiece

The Girl Who Cried Pearls is a very complex short film — both technically, with its stop-motion technique, and narratively. Considering its awards, we have a work that, despite being remarkable, goes unnoticed due to its category. But when compared to the Oscar films of 2025, it lacks nothing in terms of quality.

Looking deeper, it is a beautiful, emotional, and visually striking story. The lack of expression on the faces creates an uncanny valley that further enhances the tale, conveying the feeling that everyone lives in inertia — except for the girl who cried. Narratively, that is incredible, complex, visionary!

Final Thoughts

In the end, I did not expect to become so attached to this film, as I rarely talk about animations. However, this work knocked me down and won me over. Even though this is a short text, I leave here my Friday recommendation and ask again: what do you do in twenty minutes?

PORTUGUÊS:

Quanto Vale uma Lágrima?
A Melancolia de The Girl Who Cried Pearls

The Girl Who Cried Pearls me trouxe a sensação do medo.

No entanto, essa obra me derrubou e me conquistou.

Career Analysis #3: Philippe Garrel!

The Art of Loving According to Philippe Garrel: A Cinematic Journey Through Human Feeling

The Infinite Cycle of Love

Repeating the cycle, after all... What does it mean to love?

Philippe Garrel is a biased director who reaches out his hand and declares: "this is the destiny of human beings!" The surprising aspect of his work lies in how past, present, and future convey a single verticality through Garrel's lens: the human being was, is, and always will be programmed to feel, express, and experience emotions. In related themes, it's not about loving someone in particular, but rather about experiencing love through everyday life. Therefore, when we discuss the works of Philippe Garrel, we're talking about something that stirs the intrinsic, the intimate, and also the physical and emotional pain of the human being.

However, we still haven't answered the initial question (one of many this text will raise): what does it mean to love?

The Definition and Its Insufficiency

According to the dictionary, to love means to have love, affection, or great tenderness for someone or something. But this definition feels shallow, doesn't it? Love in its human essence, love in relation to the human being... In theory, it's something inexplicable. On the other hand, coming and going, we have a more than certain reference: Garrel.

In his films as a whole, love functions as a narrative movement that never abandons us, unlike our characters. In other words, don't attach yourself to those figures – Louis Garrel, Chlotilde Hesme, among others – but rather to the sensation they evoke. When the director proposes an exchange of experiences, he invites us to inquire and question his choices at every moment. The pleasure of works like Garrel's has as its main characteristic the question directed at his characters.

The fundamental question is: why? And the answer comes: "we're not talking about script, we're talking about life!"

La Jalousie: Guilt and Free Will

With this premise, we move on to one of my favorite films by the director: La Jalousie. Louis Garrel plays a father who has just ended his relationship with the mother of his children, without internalizing the guilt that the situation demands – or should demand. But this leads us to the first inquiry: in real life, is that really how it happens?

Guilt should be a natural way of rethinking the past, but it also establishes an anthropological philosophical relationship about the human being's connection with their own choices. Thus, Louis Garrel's character is a good father, was a good husband, and proves to be a good man in relation to the world. However, regarding his past, he seems somewhat unattached. And, after all... is there anything wrong with that?

There's no way to measure how each person deals with their decisions – that's the famous free will. However, there's something deeper about this, something we see in the film The Secret Child...

The Secret Child: Grief and Abandonment

In The Secret Child, the scenario repeats itself, but with a difference: here, guilt is indeed present. Not only guilt, but also grief. Louis plays a father who becomes involved with an actress, who at the end of the story abandons him – an attitude he himself had toward his daughter's mother. This dynamic is extremely complex through the lens of cinematic psyche, representing a predictable yet still effective choice. It's like picking the strongest card from a deck and... it acts as the strongest!

Implied love seems stronger than romantic love, or at least that's what truly sustains such stories.

Les Amants Reguliérs: Freedom and Youth

Another film that stands out in this vast filmography is Les Amants Reguliérs. In this work, we come across the following line: "You'll introduce me to sculpture, I'll introduce you to poetry. The way we introduce each other on the things we like, sheer pleasure, isn't it?" – and that defines the film perfectly.

What is more visceral than a military pursuit? Youth cries out for freedom, a freedom that militarism dictates through rules – not as criminality, but as duties. Being free is different from having choices, and war demonstrates this very well. A young man may be conscripted – that's common – but he has the option to flee the draft and still not have the freedom to choose whom he loves. All of this fits into a three-hour narrative about the relationship between Hesme and Garrel's characters, who establish a contemplative rhythm, where the story goes back and forth... It's a literary form transported to cinema – poetry, sculpture, and a purely human relationship, beyond political ideals.

The Inner Scar: Magic and Realism

Finally, I mention The Inner Scar. Imagine a folkloric film, where magic is poetically linked to Garrel's realism. To understand this work, we take a step back – let's not rush into choices that don't belong to us. After all, if we've come this far, we can conclude that our main goal with this filmmaker is not to understand logic, but rather to feel the flows. This film is truly magical – just a few minutes that convey a bolder perspective from the director, who exudes a freedom from his own conviction about what cinema is, based on his filmography. It remains here as a "bonus tip."

Final Thoughts

In the end, the experience with Garrel goes beyond entertainment – it's watching something that will comfort you on cold days, days when you are, in fact, alone! Garrel is a complete and legendary filmmaker within his niche. Therefore, don't watch his films with prejudice, but rather open to new relationships and visions of cinema, perspectives on life and teachings. He has an important legacy that manifests itself in his films and in the industry through his son, Louis Garrel. In our career analysis, he remains: Philippe Garrel!

PORTUGUÊS:

A Arte de Amar Segundo Philippe Garrel: Uma Jornada Cinematográfica pelo Sentimento Humano

O Ciclo Infinito do Amor

Repetindo o ciclo, afinal...

A Definição e Sua Insuficiência

La Jalousie: A Culpa e o Livre Arbítrio

The Secret Child: O Luto e o Abandono

Nesta obra, acompanhamos a seguinte frase: "You'll introduce me to sculpture, I'll introduce you to poetry. The way we introduce each other on the thinks we like, sheer pleasure, isn't it?"

The Inner Scar: Magia e Realismo

Para finalizar, menciono The Inner Scar.

About niches, arthouse and cinema!

Niches: The False Structuring and Formation of an Elitist Audience in Arthouse Films

Cinema is an elitist art. Let's not run away from reality: when we mention the experience of making cinema, the contemplation and appreciation of a newly created work is, in theory, its investment. Therefore, this formation of prejudice is a remnant of a little-commented history: arthouse.

What is Arthouse?

Arthouse films are generally the result of a low budget, but why? This type of niche doesn't care about financial return, but the consumer does. It's like forming a team based on a single objective. Let's take Hollywood as a reference, the largest global market. There, the idea of this team is, primarily, to seek profit. However, there are artists who still seek to embrace the arthouse ideal. So, let's go straight to the question: what is "arthouse"?

Arthouse is a term used for films with artistic purposes. Yes, they have profit and budget, but this would fall into the secondary part of the hierarchy, with the primary being the film's very creation. Taking modern names: Kogonada, Kelly Reichardt, Derek Cianfrance, among others in the more "subjugated" scene of Hollywood, are largely seeking to realize and have authorship in their works. Mark that word, it's essential! But what makes a film fit into arthouse? Let's break it down.

Structure and Autonomy

An arthouse film does not necessarily need to have a small budget, but rather a structure that makes visible the autonomy and artistic vision of the director, free from the barriers found in blockbuster films, such as interference from producers and investors. In general, being of the arthouse genre means having control over all decisions. This makes the idea of a high budget contradictory, because no investor would dare to put 150 million into something they cannot "format." Ultimately, the ideal of arthouse is freedom. Now you must be asking yourselves: what are arthouse films, and why are they considered arthouse? Let's go...

We have several examples, such as the mentioned directors, as well as classics like Murnau, Rivette, Ackerman, Godard himself. The reality is simple: the genre will not introduce itself to you. And that's why we return to the beginning of the text: the capitalist format within the arthouse genre and its erasure.

What Does it Mean to be Elitist?

Elitism is a term used to designate restriction by social class, that is, exclusivity. Exclusivity reduces the popularization of these works, thus creating a popular divide. There is a very strong stereotype of the cultured cinephile, being a white man who dictates what should or should not be consumed. This stereotype must be fought, but not by the wounded ego of the white man, but rather by the popularization that this stereotype often pretends to understand (yes, they exist...). The popularization of art is a topic that should be on government agendas. For example, in Brazil, there are plans to launch a free streaming platform with Brazilian productions, productions that do not reach the general public because there is a philosophy of monopoly in the domestic market.

Furthermore, elitism is a term very well placed in this context, because access to "cult" cinema (a word that further translates this restriction) is something you pay for. Platforms like MUBI, Criterion, Filmmica, among others, require payments between 30 and 50 reais, in addition to basic platforms like Netflix. A person who needs to buy 30 reais worth of rice to get through the month will not have access to the content. We can then enter another context: the consequence of disinterest.

Conformism and Social Exclusion

What happens when the people are met with a refusal of learning? Yes, they become conformist. Conformism in certain contexts is not merely a reciprocal refusal, but a powerful social gauge that reduces knowledge, discernment, and critical sense, thus causing a state of inertia from an extremely retrograde historical philosophy: the poor do not have access to knowledge, freedom, or money; consequently, they are doomed to remain in poverty.

How Can We Reduce These Harms? Piracy as a Tool for Democratization

So... Indeed, there are other options, and these options produce an intense ethical debate: piracy. Piracy is essential for the democratization of art, but for this to happen in an educational manner, we would need to rely on teaching. Teaching is essential for introducing works, providing context for eras, movements, and emergences that keep art alive. Consequently, even if it doesn't solve the problem, we would have a brief preliminary view of the path to follow, so that, in the end, everyone has the opportunity to choose between paying for a streaming platform or continuing with piracy.

Conclusion: Freedom of Choice and Valuation of Art

In general, what I defend in this text is not the cult concept of arthouse, but rather its potential as a plural and social study, since mainstream cinema tends to be less authored than the ones mentioned. It's about seeking to understand that freedom of choice is a human right, and at this moment, this freedom is being denied to the low-income population, because, in theory, from a social perspective, they would not consume such a niche, as they would not "understand" it. And that might happen, but for that, we need to give the people the choice, the freedom. Whether they like the film or not doesn't matter. What matters is sharing elite knowledge with popular knowledge, balancing the scales of society, and understanding that the poor possess and must have freedom, so that, finally, the artist is valued, the poor improve their lives, the market produces more, and cinema continues to expand horizons...

Nele, a ideia dessa equipe é, prioritariamente, buscar o lucro.

O Conformismo e a Exclusão Social

To Understand or to Feel?

 To Understand or to Feel?

A little about intention vs. interpretation

Today, while watching The Terrorizers, I came across a sensation I hadn't felt in a long time: the recognition of narrative inertia. What I mean is that when a film has the concept of being disruptive, the ideal would be to understand not only the obvious (such as the script), but also the conceptual through a single fragmentation – in this case, the cinematography. In other words, without further ado, I didn't understand the film's proposal beyond the concept of being intentionally a film based on inertia.

Inertia is a common proposal in Asian films, particularly those centered in countries like China, Taiwan, and Japan, because the conceptual art of these countries is historically realistic – for example, Yasujiro Ozu and Tsai Ming-liang. And what is more realistic than the monotonous? That being said, The Terrorizers is a proposal that I didn't enjoy. Technically, it's an extremely creative and bold film that truly invests in the concept of being static and aesthetic. However, parallel narratives are not something that appeals to me. But let's try to understand why intention differs so much from interpretation...

Interpretation in cinema

When we talk about interpretation in cinema, we talk about an avalanche of ideas. A film is not born from just one idea, but from a ramification of a concept, which encompasses thousands of others, consequently generating thousands more. However, people who prefer linear narratives may feel challenged when encountering a film with plural narratives, which is very good! But our focus here is to use a single experience to explore a debate.

I did feel challenged, I felt entertained, but this experience was not pleasant, nor did I feel ready to criticize it. And this is common!

Understanding the work

To understand when a film is comprehended, we need to have a fixed idea: the intention of a work does not exist from the moment it is exposed to the world. "So you're saying there's no way to understand the work?" Exactly! There are no right or wrong interpretations, only ramifications of details. The influences for an interpretation come directly from individual experiences – for example, when an actor watches a film they were part of. We don't need much to understand that the experience is different.

The concept, then, is about rationalizing what we watch. For example, the concept of The Terrorizers is to understand that the aesthetic is indeed lukewarm. The film won't invite you to be frenetic action or intense drama, but rather a kind of puzzle. A true example of this is the moment when the writer finds her inspiration elsewhere, analogically analyzing a literal puzzle piece that fit into another piece. Therefore, the concept is much more about fitting what you saw into a rationalization than necessarily understanding what you saw.

Without understanding, there is no critique

Now, I want to get to a sensitive topic: without understanding, we have no critique. What does that mean? You cannot express a critical opinion without understanding what you've consumed. Is it possible? Yes, it is. But it's not in good taste, depending on who we are and who we are writing for. I could come here and speak very badly of the film and the reasons why I didn't enjoy the experience, but that's really not the concept of C&C. And I bring here a different view from criticism itself: there are no rules for watching or consuming a work of art, but there is an ethics in sharing an ill-founded opinion.

What should I prioritize: understanding or intentionality?

Returning to our topic with the central question: what should I prioritize, understanding or intentionality? Neither!

The priority when watching a film is like a straight line. During the experience, this line will curve. Nevertheless, it will eventually end, and this experience, in the end, will ask you one single thing: what did you think? And in that answer, you will have both understanding and intentionality, which will technically tell you much more than necessary.

Consumption anxiety

To conclude, let's bring up another point: anxiety. Currently, we have many cases of consumption anxiety, whether with Instagram reels, films, books, or even games. This anxiety causes false comprehension, because within it lives the cognitive ellipsis.

The cognitive ellipsis is a blackout moment. In the theory and practice of our subject, it is a lapse of anxiety so great that, instead of consuming the content itself, the person is consuming what comes after. That is, they treat as an obligation what should be akin to a teaching, an – I repeat – experience.

Conclusion

Ultimately, understanding a film and its intention is still not the most important thing in the world. It's about reading between the lines, admiring another person's work, and living a new experience every second. Perhaps for some people this view might be important, but believe me: for the majority, it is not! Therefore, there is no reason to have this anxiety, to generate something to satisfy and prove a "completed task."

It's like a life philosophy where the theme is: don't take life so seriously. Thus, the idea that remains is the inertia of The Terrorizers, a film that invites you to absorb, but if you don't, the film won't "haunt you"...

Interpretação no cinema

Compreender a obra

A ansiedade do consumo

 Cinema as a whole

The fruit of French cinema, how it begins, and why it is so important.

Let's get straight to the point: French cinema is not only a protective mantle for global cinema but also the reference when it comes to auteur cinema.

Beginning and importance

French cinema does not begin with the Lumière brothers, but rather with the internal revolution of how art was seen by society. What does that mean? French cinema is a point of view apart from the world, and this stands out in the 1960s, when names like Jean-Luc Godard begin to emerge. The correct point is not "when," but rather "why," and with that we have the true question of this text: why French cinema?

Cinema as market vs. literary art

Seeing cinema as a market is a natural movement of human beings – it's not criminal or punitive – but it is at this point that France diverges from the rest of the "world," when it sees in cinema something as powerful as literature. And from this arises a recurring characteristic of local art: the marriage between literature and cinema. And unlike the names mentioned, I want to highlight one in particular: Jean Cocteau and his La Belle et la Bête: a classic adapted.

French singularity

At this point in the French chronology, we find certain dystopias in relation to the world, as if, in fact, there were something different about France, something that walked much more alongside the narrative of novelists than alongside arts produced in Japan and the USA, where the story was much more about telling something new for the sake of bringing novelty – for example, Banshun by Ozu. These are stories that, although complex and objective, did not possess the "lyrical I" that France presented boldly. It is as if there were a world inside France, and in that world, at the exact moment when global reality was heading in one direction, in that country, in the home of the Eiffel Tower, something told that mode of expression to go the opposite way. And then we arrive at the main phase: the Nouvelle Vague.

What was the Nouvelle Vague?

"Nouvelle Vague" is a term used worldwide to define narrative revolt movements in cinema, including the Brazilian, Chinese, and others. However, France appropriated the term because, undeniably, the idea of market revolution was precisely to go against the market. Here we can cite great names beyond Godard, such as Agnès Varda, Jacques Demy, François Truffaut, Rivette, among others. But citing names without proper knowledge gets us nowhere. So, what was the French Nouvelle Vague?

It was everything, it was nothing... In this period, what truly mattered was what the author wanted to do. In an interview on some ordinary day in Paris, Godard was asked whether he would ever like to make big-budget films, since his were very low-budget. He says yes! On the other hand – and this is an important aside – he replies that when a film has a large budget, it ceases to be auteur cinema and starts to encompass much more the source of the investment (investors and producers) than necessarily the director's will. This point of Godard's becomes emblematic because it contains not only the voices of the Nouvelle Vague but also society's view of cinema itself, being the beginning of the current market, which indeed seeks much more the sale of a potential film than necessarily what the film is. That is why, when we talk about the market, France truly stands out: it received the necessary attention, unlike emerging and underdeveloped countries. So, when we speak of importance, yes, France had many merits, but it was not the only country that adopted this view of what auteur cinema was. Therefore, through globalization, we today have an in-depth knowledge of various global cinematographic movements, but back then, France was, and deserved, the spotlight!

Disruptive narratives and Le Gai Savoir

Another idea to bring into the text is how the pluralization of narratives brought increasingly disruptive and postmodern works to the era, and among so many others, I highlight the film Le Gai Savoir by Godard. Le Gai Savoir is an experimental film about the socialist ideal, where students are observed doing... nothing! They literally sit and rehearse ideas about society, which reveals an idea that did not become mature – or, to put it better, to the naked eye.

This first impression is the preliminary step in Godard's more playful works, where he uses this device of pre-finalization, of idealizing something, filtering minimally, and filming only the part about idealizing. However, this idea falls into a certain paradox: what did Godard actually idealize?

Godard as the face of French cinema

Godard was a more than complex figure: as a person, a visionary young man; as an artist, an egocentric. This does not make him a bad human being, but it makes him the face of French cinema to this day, because he had the necessary personality to sustain a whole revolution in art.

Conclusion: France as the home of cinema

In short, French cinema is much larger than snippets. We have parallel, urban names who passed through the country and did not stay, yet left their mark. France, in the end, deserves to be looked upon with a certain nostalgia by cinephiles: it is a crucial stage for anyone who wants to understand cinema. Despite everything, it is still the home of cinema!

A singularidade francesa

Narrativas disruptivas e Le Gai Savoir

Do we feel old?

How to Deal with Cinema's Aging? An Essay on Valuing the Present

Is Cinema Outdated?

To support a clear thesis: cinema is outdated. There are no longer ways to innovate, but rather means to modify an already established structure. When the Lumière brothers created (with reservations) the moving image, we need to consider what they actually did afterward. To begin this reflection, let's start with the simple: what is narrative?

What Is Narrative, After All?

Narrative is a term used as movement — the movement of a story. Many still confuse narrative with the story itself, but the central idea of this definition is the way the story is told. A recent example is Christopher Nolan's film Following. I mention Nolan because he, in many of his ideas, has become synonymous with narrative. His film subverts what would be a common story into something definitively experimental. It is in this manner of telling — breaking structures well defined by the industry — that the true definition of narrative resides. How does this relate to our theme?

Art Does Not Age; Society Abandons It

To understand aging, it is necessary to comprehend that no work ages by itself. And I recognize some hypocrisy here, because in the eyes of society, works do fall into oblivion. On the other hand, why are books still read as sources of knowledge, while cinema is not?

Books and cinema walk side by side — not because of similarities or differences, but because they are art. Art itself does not age: it adapts to time (pay attention to this statement). It is the world that ages something that has no shelf life. Time should not adapt to the work — that would be dangerous.

The Problem of Representation: The Case of Africa in American Cinema

Let's go straight to the most absurd point of cinema: African representation in American film production. Children's cartoons portrayed Africa as a generalized continent, with primitive characteristics, dehumanizing and propagating a colonial and racist worldview. My conclusion about works of this genre is this: cinema does not age, but neither should it regress.

When Does Aging Become a Real Problem?

We are in 2026 — a relatively short period for humanity. Cinema occupies a tiny fraction of this timeline. There is still room for growth and for a form of consumption that maintains cinema as mainstream art. To return to the beginning of the text: cinema is outdated. The main proof of this is not similar films or repeated narratives, but rather the way we consume cinema — the gadgets beyond direct contact, such as 3D.

3D emerged as an innovation but quickly fell into oblivion because it does not change the essence of watching a film and feeling the reason why melodrama moves us, horror frightens us, and adventure reimagines our reality. The ends, after all, do not justify the means. With this, we arrive at what truly defines the aging of a work: the market.

The Film Market in 2026: Events, Not Films

When we talk about the film market today, we talk about events — literally events. Superhero movies turn theaters into true stadiums. Although this is a valid experience, it goes against the history of cinema — not from a nostalgic perspective, but from a consumption perspective.

It is not common to watch a Bergman film in theaters today, but a film like Harry Potter (2001) — yes. The industry chooses what ages and falls into oblivion, making cinema increasingly an elitist consumer market. Harry Potter can be re-released, but an emblematic film from the 1960s cannot.

This happens because the market needs to remind audiences of what was successful. A work from 1965 would not make money, because in today's imagination such a film is "outdated" — which completely ignores the possibility of a new encounter. And in this, we have a lazy conclusion from the industry: remakes.

Remakes vs. Literature: Why Do Books Escape?

Let's draw a parallel with books. Why are remakes rare in literature? Because preserving the author is more than necessary for the initial idea to be shared. Despite the thousands of editions of Dostoevsky around the world, the originality of the writing remains. Cinematic remakes, on the other hand, do not preserve ideology — they rejuvenate casts. Films are no longer sold for their content, but for their cast, production, and above all, their potential as the "event of the year." Remakes say much more about the industry's ego than about a genuine reintroduction to classic works.

Conclusion: Do Your Part

Understand that old works may seem intimidating, but isn't this the same process of human growth? Seeking what frightens us, living through discomfort. The "aging" of works is not merely a collective phenomenon — it is, specifically, that single individual who stops and decides to watch a black-and-white film they so feared. Human reality is a process of shedding the chains that bind us to basic knowledge, when so many have already thought that social limitation would be the path to everything.

As in Plato's cave: knowledge will be there for those who seek it beyond what is presented.
