This question might sound silly when we talk about real life. After all, 20 minutes in a person's daily routine barely covers the time for a lunch break. And it is precisely within this span that short films reside. But let's not talk about the genre in general; this text, by the way, might be shorter than what you're used to reading here at C&C.

The Fear That Money Reveals

The Girl Who Cried Pearls brought me the feeling of fear. Not the common fear, of monsters and phobias, but the fear of humanity toward itself. What, in fact, is money?

Money is a value that is rarely debated — not only because it dictates the world, but because it confronts the morality of living in a society that, in theory, practices social cannibalism. In other words, that young girl's tears were worth more than her heart, more than her pain. And the young man tried to refuse this ethical breach, but in a world where cruelty prevails, where does empathetic reality lie?

It does not exist. There is no world where human beings truly see themselves in another's pain, or at least try to do so. It is like reinterpreting a perspective that never even existed.

The Normalization of Pain

Imagine with me how many car accidents occur on a daily basis. Now rethink how many of them are treated as mere incidents, simply because they get lost in the tangle of bad news that society generates.

This is a normalization of pain that does not align with religious commandments, with psychological principles, or even with the group nature of human beings — after all, we are the only collective animal that systematically refuses to help one another.

The Value of a Tear

And at this point, we can delve a little deeper into the short film and return to the question in the title: how much is a tear worth?

Tears are a curvature close to the human gaze. They are the declaration that something significant has been born, receiving reasons for which emotion — as natural as it is beautiful — exceeded the rationality of the brain. In other words, tears are an involuntary movement. And this movement is the perception of something beyond the ordinary, something that pulls us out of our comfort zone, whether positively or negatively. It is relative.

A Stop-Motion Masterpiece

The Girl Who Cried Pearls is a very complex short film — both technically, with its stop-motion technique, and narratively. Considering its awards, we have a work that, despite being remarkable, goes unnoticed due to its category. But when compared to the Oscar films of 2025, it lacks nothing in terms of quality.

Looking deeper, it is a beautiful, emotional, and visually striking story. The lack of expression on the faces creates an uncanny valley that further enhances the tale, conveying the feeling that everyone lives in inertia — except for the girl who cried. Narratively, that is incredible, complex, visionary!

Final Thoughts

In the end, I did not expect to become so attached to this film, as I rarely talk about animations. However, this work knocked me down and won me over. Even though this is a short text, I leave here my Friday recommendation and ask again: what do you do in twenty minutes?

Mas não vamos falar do gênero em geral; este texto, aliás, pode ser mais curto do que vocês costumam ler aqui na C&C.

O Medo que o Dinheiro Revela

The Girl Who Cried Pearls me trouxe a sensação do medo. Não o medo comum, de monstros e fobias, mas o medo da humanidade em relação a si mesma. O que, de fato, é o dinheiro?

O dinheiro é um valor pouco debatido — não somente por ser o que dita o mundo, mas porque ele confronta a moralidade de conviver em uma sociedade que, em tese, pratica o canibalismo social. Ou seja, as lágrimas daquela jovem valiam mais do que seu coração, mais do que sua dor. E o rapaz tentou recusar essa quebra ética, mas em um mundo onde a crueldade domina, onde jaz a realidade empática?

Ela não existe. Não há um mundo onde o ser humano se enxergue verdadeiramente na dor do outro, ou ao menos tente fazê-lo. É como ressignificar uma perspectiva que sequer existiu.

A Normalização da Dor

Imagine comigo quantos acidentes de carro ocorrem diariamente. Agora repense sobre quantos deles são tratados como meros incidentes, apenas por se perderem no emaranhado de notícias ruins que a sociedade produz.

Essa é uma normalização da dor que não condiz com mandamentos religiosos, com princípios psicológicos, nem mesmo com a natureza grupal do ser humano — afinal, somos o único animal coletivo que se recusa sistematicamente a ajudar o próximo.

O Valor de uma Lágrima

E nisso podemos nos aprofundar um pouco mais no curta, retomando a pergunta do título: quanto vale uma lágrima?

Lágrimas são uma curvatura rente ao olhar humano. São a declaração de que algo significativo nasceu, recebendo motivos pelos quais a emoção — tão natural quanto bela — excedeu a racionalidade do cérebro. Ou seja, a lágrima é um movimento involuntário. E esse movimento é a percepção de algo além do comum, algo que nos tira da zona de conforto, seja positiva ou negativamente. É relativo.

Uma Obra Prima do Stop-Motion

The Girl Who Cried Pearls é um curta muito complexo — tanto tecnicamente, com sua técnica em stop-motion, quanto narrativamente. Levando em conta seus prêmios, temos uma obra que, apesar de notável, passa despercebida por sua categoria. Mas, comparando com os filmes do Oscar de 2025, não fica a dever nada em questão de qualidade.

Observando a fundo, é uma história linda, emotiva e visualmente marcante. A falta de expressão nos rostos gera um vale da estranheza que engrandece ainda mais a trama, transmitindo a sensação de que todos vivem na inércia — exceto a garota que chorava. Isso, narrativamente, é incrível, complexo, visionário!
