In my experience, the question was never about believing what was being said and shown, but rather how I dealt with it. And it was one of the best experiences I’ve had with a film in 2026. It’s not about demanding realism, but about understanding the film’s needs.

Naturalism and Irony in Eastern Cinema

However, there is a small obstacle for those who insist on literality, which is the naturalism of Eastern cinema. This type of cinema is somewhat more contradictory regarding being essentially functional. What I mean is that, much like American horror cinema, irony is present most of the time: while the dialogues and situations reveal lyricism, poetry, something truly literary, the camera, cinematography, and its techniques carry a real, raw tone.

So, when we talk about a film that sustains itself through the questioning of reality, what exactly are we talking about?

When the Film Doesn’t Move Forward

In the case of Silent Rain, the truth is that the film does not move forward, it does not evolve. There are certain types of narratives that will not challenge or invite stimulation. These films, however, demand empathy and the complacency of seeing through another’s point of view, the true source of imagining oneself under those circumstances. The film then transforms this demand into something compelling. However, it does not overuse this device.

Thus, we enter the estimated reality of a romance film, a melodrama. It’s as if the world stopped every time the couple was on screen. They didn’t need much, they didn’t even explore what the surroundings demanded, but they existed, they had something unique: the relationship. The relationship tells a complete story, not of a beginning, middle, and end, but of a past, present, and future history.

The Construction of the Characters

The protagonists' past is light, and as mentioned, they are the fruits of a naturalist movement, they don’t bloom from nothing. The construction of this background is effective because, while the protagonists are being developed, they are being humanized.

Many films, when trying to develop a connection with the audience, tend to give more context (narrative body) than necessarily personality to what truly values the film’s structure, that is, the literal engine, the characters. And in Silent Rain, it is the complete opposite. For more concrete examples, ideas that have been tested and insistently functional, we have Hong Sang-soo and, present in the cast, Naomi Kawase. I feel that these two artists serve as an aesthetic and, in fact, narrative reference in Ryûtarô Nakagawa's film.

The Functionality of References

And what is the functionality of references within the film? References, many times, are aestheticisms, construction tools. But something curious occurred to me during the film regarding this text. Around the 40-minute mark, I was certain the film was signed by Naomi Kawase, not only because of the screenplay but because of the symbolism of food. Naomi, in Sweet Bean, demonstrates an authorial relationship concerning the connection between food, memories, and feelings, these aligned directly with the way the film's aesthetic becomes.

It’s important to mention this not because it is, in fact, important, but because it relates to the casting and crew within this essentially “small” film. The film didn’t break out, it didn’t go to huge award ceremonies, which reinforces an idea that I really like: there is no need for media approval for a film to be good.

Love in the Everyday

Imagine loving someone who doesn’t remember the previous day, but imagine even more the pain of being worn out, being in love, and still discovering that this love is reciprocated through the details of daily life. Therefore, when the film ends, we feel an emptiness. This emptiness remains intact because the nearly two-hour construction was objectively planned to make it possible. I believe that a good film is one that touches you, that allows you to feel things, and a bad one is one that keeps you in comfort, but the worst of them is the one that leaves you indifferent. There are no unjustly treated films, but a film that was made for everyone is a film that was made for no one. Silent Rain might be intense on an emotional day, a day when thinking about life is the last option.

An Opinion, Not an Essay

Finally, I consider this text much more of an opinion than an essay. I could approach it and write from a critical point of view, but that’s not what the experience calls for. However, the main idea is that you should watch films without having a background, let yourself be delighted by countless characteristics, assimilate the narrative into your life: live the hours! Do enough so that the film means something to you, transform the relationship, live the reference, and in the end, the message that remains from Silent Rain is that love does not choose a date, nor a moment, it chooses presence, and Yuki felt that firsthand...

Em minha experiência, a questão nunca foi crer no que estava sendo dito e mostrado, mas sim como eu lidava com aquilo. E foi uma das melhores experiências que já tive com um filme em 2026. Não é sobre cobrar um realismo, e sim entender as necessidades do filme.

O Naturalismo e a Ironia no Cinema Oriental

Todavia, há um pequeno impasse para aqueles que urgem da literalidade, que é o naturalismo do cinema oriental. Esse tipo de cinema é um pouco mais contraditório no quesito de ser essencialmente funcional. O que quero dizer é que, assim como o cinema de terror americano, a ironia está presente em sua maior parte do tempo: enquanto os diálogos e as situações revelam um lirismo, uma poesia, algo realmente literário, a câmera, a fotografia e suas técnicas são de um tom real, cru.

Então, quando falamos de um filme que se mantém através da indagação da realidade, do que exatamente estamos falando?

Quando o Filme Não Caminha

No caso de Silent Rain, a verdade é que o filme não caminha, não evolui. Há certos tipos de narrativas que não vão questionar ou convidar aos estímulos. Esses filmes, no entanto, exigem a empatia e a complacência de enxergar pelo ponto de visão do outro, a verdadeira fonte de se imaginar sob aquelas circunstâncias. O filme então transforma essa exigência em algo apelativo. Outrora, ele não abusa desse artifício.

Então entramos na realidade estimada de um filme de romance, um melodrama. É como se o mundo parasse cada vez que o casal estava na tela. Eles não precisavam de muito, sequer exploravam o que o ao redor pedia, mas existiam, tinham algo único: a relação. A relação conta uma história completa, não de começo, meio e fim, mas de história passada, presente e futura.

A Construção dos Personagens

O passado dos protagonistas é leve, e como já dito, são frutos de um movimento naturalista, não florescem do nada. A construção desse background é efetiva, pois, enquanto os protagonistas estão sendo desenvolvidos, eles estão sendo humanizados.

Muitos filmes, ao tentarem desenvolver uma relação com o público, tendem a dar mais contexto (corpo narrativo) do que necessariamente personalidade ao que realmente valoriza a estrutura do filme, ou seja, o motor literal, os personagens. E em Silent Rain é extremamente o contrário. A exemplos mais concretos, ideias que foram testadas e insistentemente funcionais, temos Hong Sang Soo e, a presente no elenco, Naomi Kawase. Sinto que esses dois artistas assinam como referência estética e, de fato, narrativa no filme de Ryûtarô Nakagawa.

A Funcionalidade das Referências

E qual a funcionalidade das referências dentro do filme? Referências, muitas das vezes, são esteticismos, ferramentas de construção. Mas algo curioso me ocorreu durante o filme referente a este texto. Por volta dos 40 minutos, tive certeza que o filme era assinado por Naomi Kawase, não somente pelo roteiro, mas pelo simbolismo da comida. Naomi, em Sweet Bean, demonstra uma relação autoral acerca da relação entre comida, memórias e sentimentos, esses alinhados diretamente à forma com que a estética do filme se torna.

É importante citar isso não por ser, de fato, importante, mas por ter uma relação de casting e equipe dentro desse filme essencialmente “pequeno”. O filme não furou a bolha, não foi para premiações enormes, o que reforça uma ideia que muito me agrada: não há necessidade de aprovação da mídia para que o filme seja bom.

O Amor no Cotidiano

De volta ao filme, é desgastante...

Imagine amar alguém que não se lembra do dia anterior, mas imagine ainda mais a dor de estar desgastado, estar apaixonado, e ainda descobrir que aquele amor é correspondido através dos detalhes do dia a dia. Yuki descobriu isso, não é por maldade, mas pela insistência, confirmação de que o amor é muito mais o cotidiano do que necessariamente datas especiais. O amor está presente na relação mista da saudade com a independência, da dor com a estética. É entender que quando o espaço é compartilhado, há um mormaço de compreensão durante 24 horas de um dia.

O Vazio que Fica

Portanto, quando o filme acaba, a gente sente um vazio. Esse vazio permanece intacto, pois a construção de quase duas horas foi objetivamente planejada para que ele fosse possível. Tenho para mim que o filme bom é aquele que te toca, que te permite sentir coisas, e o ruim é aquele que te mantém no conforto, mas o pior deles é o que te deixa indiferente. Não existem filmes injustiçados, mas um filme que foi feito para todos é um filme que não foi feito para ninguém. Silent Rain talvez seja intenso em um dia emocional, um dia onde pensar sobre a vida é a última opção.

What does it mean to go beyond what is expected? In theory, it is surprise, change. However, there are cases where adaptations are nothing more nor less than a certain way of changing the medium of a format.

In our case, we will use the film 4 Nights of a Dreamer as our foundation. Robert Bresson's film is the narrative that shapes the main character based on the book White Nights by Fyodor Dostoevsky.

The adaptation itself is a copy. Yet, there are caveats that turn Bresson's narrative fidelity into something almost original. The eternal question that remains is: how is it possible to adapt without losing the author's originality?

The Freedom of Adaptation

In its literality, adaptation is the author's freedom to modify a structure, not necessarily to create something from scratch in order to be original and worthy of recognition.

What I mean is that, just as there are cases of true narrative twists (such as video game movies, like Resident Evil), there are also cases where the source material is what truly enriches the work being adapted.

For example, we are in 2026, a year where adaptations reign in the film market, such as superhero movies and soap operas. However, there is a parallel importance to this discussion: the way of adapting to present works to different audiences.

Bresson's Subtlety

And so we come to exalt Bresson's subtlety and honesty. The film 4 Nights of a Dreamer is important for presenting a classic from the 1800s to a new generation. In this case, the reinvention of art for what was, at the time, the newly discovered seventh art.

It is for these functions that the technological revolution needs to revive, highlight, and exalt classic works through new media, the main reason being the rebirth and rediscovery of works that often fall into oblivion.

Cinema was born with the function of recalling moments, through the "spoken image," which is, in fact, a multiple stimulus. Cinema has the ability to stimulate various senses, including vision, hearing, and psychological effects, such as emotional stimulation—for example, the effect of nostalgia.

Therefore, when we present classic works through cinema, we are speaking directly to entire generations who, being present, need adaptations to their reality, whether that reality is good or bad.

Faithful or Original?

With that, is there a truth in the discussion between faithful and original adaptation? No!

The faithful adaptation is functional for such a presentation. It re-signifies through media why the interdependence of a work with a new version is necessary.

The reality itself is that the way of telling a story automatically generates a new version. What I mean is that, regardless of whether it is identical to the source work or not, any work that changes authors is a new work.

So, if you are looking for a work identical to Dostoevsky's in 4 Nights of a Dreamer, you will be disappointed. The world was different in Bresson's time, and he had to adapt to that. Do you understand how the correlation of a work with the time in which it was produced is more than functional depending on the objective?

Authorial Works

"What about original works?" Original works have something a bit more subjective. When we speak of authorial subjectivity, we have in mind a mechanism that is, in theory, free. But the foundation will be present 100% of the time, whether in structure, concept, characters, or dialogue.

A classic example of this are the films of Christopher Nolan, a director known for his bold decisions, which, somehow, gave the director a consolidated image. Today, if Christopher Nolan decides to release an adaptation, we all know it will have an authorial way of telling a particular story.

And that is why, through authorial adaptations, we have a new way of telling the old, a way that both retells and tells at the same time.

The Importance of Visions

Ultimately, the importance of both forms is highlighted when the source work gains new visions. And by vision, I mean a new way of seeing a particular universe: with each look, each soul that touches those adaptations and works becomes a fusion of visions. After all, as stated, a work that changes authors is a new work.

So, when people say an adaptation is bad, or that it doesn't do justice to the original work, go with the idea that works are individual, and within these individualities reside experiences, visions, and relationships that we cannot even imagine.

And when 4 Nights of a Dreamer tells the story of Dostoevsky's novella, it also tells a little about French cinema, about the distorted view of reality through which Bresson saw the world (and even similar to Dostoevsky's melancholy).

Conclusion

In conclusion, the book is one thing, the film is another. In the worst-case scenario, consume both and draw your own conclusions!

A adaptação em si é uma cópia. No entanto, há ressalvas que tornam a fidelidade narrativa de Bresson em algo até mesmo original. A questão eterna que fica é: como é possível adaptar sem perder a originalidade do autor?

A liberdade da adaptação

Em sua literalidade, a adaptação é a liberdade do autor de modificar uma estrutura, não necessariamente criar algo do zero para, enfim, ser original e digno de reconhecimento.

O que quero dizer é que, assim como existem casos de reais reviravoltas narrativas (tais quais filmes de videogames, como Resident Evil), também existem casos onde a base é o que, verdadeiramente, enriquece a obra a ser adaptada.

Por exemplo, estamos em 2026, ano onde as adaptações reinam em meio ao mercado cinematográfico, vide filmes de super-herói e novelas. No entanto, há uma certa importância paralela a essa discussão: a forma de adaptação para apresentar obras a diferentes públicos.

A sutileza de Bresson

E assim caímos para exaltar a sutileza e honestidade de Bresson. O filme 4 Nights of a Dreamer é importante para apresentar um clássico de 1800 a uma nova geração. Nesse caso, a reinvenção da arte para a, na época, recém-descoberta sétima arte.

É por essas funcionalidades que a revolução tecnológica precisa reviver, ressaltar e exaltar obras clássicas através de novas mídias, sendo o principal motivo a renascença e redescoberta de obras que, muitas das vezes, caem no esquecimento.

Mas por que isso acontece?

O novo versus o clássico

Nós, enquanto seres humanos, temos uma lógica plantada na estruturação da sociedade – esta em forma de mercado – de acreditar que o novo é melhor e que deve ser mais valorizado do que o antigo. No entanto, caímos na fase da dificuldade de diferenciar a novidade do saudosismo.

Na teoria, os clássicos são obras de difícil acesso muito por conta da forma com que nos é apresentado. Paulo Freire, educador e filósofo, defendia a apresentação de obras clássicas com base na realidade do aluno.

O que isso quer dizer? Vamos lá: a realidade de um jovem nos anos 20 nada mais é do que estímulos. Com isso, temos algumas opções de adaptar um Dostoiévski a tal realidade. Uma delas, o cinema. Mas não vamos apenas soltar informações, vamos tentar ir além...

O cinema como estímulo

O cinema nasceu com a funcionalidade de relembrar momentos, sendo através da “imagem falada”, o que é, de fato, um estímulo múltiplo. O cinema possui a habilidade de estimular sentidos variados, entre eles a visão, a audição e efeitos psicológicos, como a estimulação do emocional – por exemplo, o efeito da nostalgia.

Portanto, ao apresentarmos obras clássicas através do cinema, estamos falando diretamente com gerações inteiras que, enquanto presentes, precisam de adaptações para sua realidade, seja ela boa ou não.

Fiel ou original?

Com isso, há uma verdade na discussão entre adaptação fiel e original? Não!

A adaptação fiel é funcional para tal apresentação. Ela ressignifica através das mídias o porquê de ser necessária a interdependência de uma obra com uma nova versão.

A realidade em si é que a forma de contar uma história gera uma nova versão de maneira automática. O que quero dizer é que, independentemente de ser idêntica ou não à obra base, qualquer obra que mude de autor é uma obra nova.

Então, se você busca uma obra idêntica à de Dostoiévski em 4 Nights of a Dreamer, irá se decepcionar. O mundo era diferente na época de Bresson, e isso ele teve de adaptar. Entendem como a correlação de uma obra com o tempo a qual foi produzida é mais do que funcional dependendo de qual for o objetivo?

Obras autorais

“E sobre as originais?”. Obras originais possuem algo um pouco mais subjetivo. Quando falamos de subjetividade autoral, temos em mente uma mecânica que, em tese, é livre. Mas a base estará presente em 100% do tempo, seja ela em estrutura, conceito, personagens ou diálogos.

Um exemplo clássico disso são os filmes de Christopher Nolan, diretor polêmico por suas decisões ousadas, mas que, de algum jeito, deram ao diretor uma imagem consolidada. Hoje, se Christopher Nolan decidir lançar uma adaptação, todos sabemos que terá uma forma autoral de contar determinada história.

E é por isso que, através de adaptações autorais, temos uma forma nova de contar o velho, uma forma que reconta e conta ao mesmo tempo.

A importância das visões

Enfim, a importância de ambas as formas é ressaltada quando a obra base ganha novas visões. E, como visão, quero dizer uma forma nova de enxergar determinado universo: a cada olhar, cada alma que toca aquelas adaptações e obras se torna uma junção de visões. Afinal, como dito, uma obra que muda de autor é uma obra nova.

Então, quando falarem que uma adaptação é ruim, ou que não faz jus à obra original, vá com a ideia de que obras são individuais, e nessas individualidades moram vivências, visões, relações que sequer imaginamos.

E quando 4 Nights of a Dreamer conta a história da novela de Dostoiévski, ela conta também um pouco do cinema francês, da visão deturpada da realidade a qual Bresson enxergava o mundo (e até mesmo semelhante à melancolia de Dostoiévski).

Conclusão

Concluindo, o livro é um, o filme é outro. Na pior das hipóteses, consuma os dois e tire suas conclusões!

The film is a character study, but before we delve into the engaging and depressing narrative of this British feature, let us together decipher what this so-called "character study" actually means.

What is a Character Study?

In cinema, we have various narrative approaches, and despite what theorists and critics might say, each film has unique characteristics that distinguish it from other filmmaking methods. A functional analogy is the human fingerprint. No human being has the same fingerprint; perhaps this reinforces the idea that each body requires something different, each blood composition, each desire guided by the conscious mind. Everything, everything is the result of a single way of telling a story, and so it is with film.

A recent example would be Guillermo Del Toro's versions of Pinocchio and Frankenstein, films that greatly resemble the past, where we had the famous "classical narratives," but which, in the director's versions, gain a different soul. I emphasize this because the film itself is filmed theater. However, this characteristic is not perceptible, because it is through sensory stimuli, including screams, cries, and the expression of anger, that the feature film goes through narrative highs and lows, thus creating a seesaw effect: one moment we are on edge, and the next, we are holding back emotion.

Norman: The Invisible Protagonist

Emotion is a crucial factor for the film to work, because it is through it that Norman, our first protagonist, finds himself dependent. He dedicates his entire life to being support, a withering role, a sort of cannibal of his own emotions, which, willingly or not, crown his reason as an unconscious sidelining. That is, no matter how much he tries to neutralize that hypocritical environment with alcohol, he still must maintain reason, which is frequently oscillating.

But when Norman is called upon, he is always there. Not only because he is an excellent professional, but because, at some point in his life, his life became about being an assistant. And when Norman tries to break free from this, he retreats. He retreats because that life is aggressive enough: they do not see him as a man, as a human being, nor as a functional assistant, but they see him as a tool, an accessory.

The "Sir": The Voice of the Artistic World

On the other hand, we have a possible redemption. "Possible." But why "possible"? Well, we are talking about one of the greatest representatives of classical literature in the world, a theater that urges, resonates through none other than Shakespeare. Not even the war made people stop coming to see him, but the mind takes its toll, stress has consequences, and he who once lived for art fights to keep it alive, even if that means abandoning his own destiny. And that is why the phrase "The Third Act of a Legend."

So, when do the stories come together? They are intertwined by decadence and ascension. The ascension, rarely mentioned, is the stagnation of success; after all, as long as there is an audience, success exists. On the other hand, the relationship between the two protagonists is exhausting. Suddenly, we, as the film's audience, watch that metalinguage with a certain pessimism. We hold back tears, fear, and endure the growing tension. We are immersed. This immersion is what enhances that narrative.

Linear Narrative as the Film's Lifeblood

Linear narrative is not just an option; it is the film's lifeblood, because it is not based on the three acts, but rather on the gradual decay of a group. And this group as a whole has no personality, but it has a sub-nucleus that lives through this group. Just as the theater legend and Norman have a dependency, without both, the group would not exist. It is noticeable that the film forces this incessantly: the director wants us to know that the repetition, the created tension, and the long monologues are intentional. But what is the purpose?

The Viewer's Immersive Experience

I often find myself thinking: what to expect from a film? The expectations we create are reflections of an idealization, often based on a title, a synopsis... But still, we are the ones responsible for these expectations. Ultimately, the film is as it should be. Therefore, when talking about The Dresser, we don't expect much, because the premise is simple, but its experience is unique.

Have you ever imagined yourself in a dark room, 40-degree heat, and you can't even move? That's the feeling of the film. You endure the tension, you want to cry, but not out of sadness, but because you feel pity for how degrading that environment has become. And in the end, the conclusion...

The Conclusion: Legacy and Emptiness

The end celebrates the legacy, but re-signifies Norman's entire journey, who concludes all his effort with... nothing. Norman wasted time, he made an effort, because it was all he had. But try explaining to a "god" that the loss of a single creature is enough for an entire ecosystem to fail. He wouldn't understand, because he is not the ideal individual.
