These cultural branches range from works about historical events to distinct characteristics, such as Japanese “anime.” Looking back, there has been a certain rejection of animation by the general public—but not for the obvious reason, which would be the denial of something that does not reflect reality (the famous “live-action”), but rather due to the constructed idea that anything with cartoon-like traits is necessarily intended for children.

This perception began with Disney; however, long before the company’s studios, there were works such as A Trip to the Moon, a turning point in cinema that introduced the idea of animation as a genre in itself—yet one that declines when it collides with reality: the market. And from this emerges Walt Disney Studios, the main commercial gateway for animation.

Is Disney the villain?

At this point, you might be asking: “Is Disney the villain?” No.

Disney produced works with mature themes between the 1960s and 1990s; they are plural, multifaceted works. They do not strictly belong to a specific age group, but rather to a target audience. I defend the idea that Disney is not a villain, because such a thing does not truly exist. The “enemy” is what ideology has led us to believe—that would be the construction of the target audience.

And what is a target audience?

Market, audience, and the limitation of the genre

When cinema emerges, genres are born, which in turn create the market. This market, statistically, works directly with the initial focus, the product’s life cycle, and finally, the analysis of what “worked” or not.

Consequently, animation becomes easily associated with children, because the market insisted on this idea even before the genre was fully formed. Thus, works like the ones mentioned—and even more recent ones such as Shrek—carry a fantastical tone while hiding messages that help structure society to this day. In literature, this is known as a fable: stories with a moral lesson.

But, similarly to cases like Attack on Titan, when does animation allow itself to explore a broader audience?

The contemporary deconstruction of animation

Reconstructing ideas: Adult Swim is a widely used term due to the television channel that seeks to popularize “adult animation.”

Shows such as The Simpsons, South Park, and Family Guy are key references in this context, as they achieved major success. Therefore, we can say that between the 2000s and 2020s there has been a certain deconstruction of animation—something that had been developing for decades, but that gained strength when the market began to explicitly treat these works as products.

The power of details and the continuity of art

Recapping and returning to the beginning: expressions are crucial for animation—whether aimed at adults or children—to function as product, artwork, and narrative.

The construction of this text, although historical, aims to highlight the power of details within popularity, where the existence of one element should not—and likely will not—limit the mass production of animated works.

With this, studios such as Disney and Ghibli can rely on the history of cinema as a foundation to affirm that animation still has a vast, almost endless story to tell.

As vertentes culturais citadas vão desde obras sobre eventos históricos até características próprias, como, por exemplo, o “anime” japonês. Voltando à história, temos uma certa rejeição do público geral com o gênero, mas não pelo motivo óbvio, que seria a negação de algo que não dialoga com a realidade — o famoso “live action” —, mas sim uma construção ideal de que, quando algo possui traços cartunescos, necessariamente é para um público infantil.

Essa construção teve início justamente com a Disney; porém, muito antes dos estúdios da empresa, houve obras como A Trip to the Moon, uma reviravolta na sétima arte que conduz, cinematograficamente, à ideia de que a animação surge como um gênero em si, mas que decai quando esbarra na realidade: o mercado. Mas, semelhantes aos casos de Attack on Titan, quando a animação se permite explorar seu público de forma mais ampla?

Commonly, when we mention war films, we mainly talk about politics. This sphere holds supreme importance in Pawel Pawlikowski's film, because the entire plot resides within it. Cold War, the 2018 film, depicts politics as a backdrop — one that is, in theory, invisible. On the other hand, introspection occupies the narrative entirely. Within it reside peace, chaos, and everything we might consider part of a relationship. The protagonists' relationship is not guided by the difficulties of coexistence, as in most romance films, but rather by life's mismatches and events.

This is the main way the screenplay intensifies and deepens the characters' psyche. Thus, when they drift apart, we sense that something is near: the reunion. When it happens, our guess doesn't act as a surprise factor; it acts as a true connection, where the protagonists are, at last, soulmates.

The Character Zula and Feminine Idealization

Therefore, let's turn to the main character: Zula. She is a caricatured figure from the film's beginning, almost representing the feminine idealization in cinema. But what would this idealization be? Historically, cinema represents the female figure through two main archetypes: the complex (irony and contradiction, much like male characters when they are protagonists) and the sensual (the body as a crucial part of the figure). In Cold War, complexity gains an almost amusing edge. This is because the film allows itself to ironize feelings, constantly contradicting the image of speech. But why does this archetype work?

The Male Gaze and the Construction of the Character

The world of contradiction is the ideal world. However, the feminine world through a man's eyes can be a violent conception or merely an infantile perspective, where woman resides, adapts, and lives everywhere. In this film, Pawlikowski demonstrates a vision in which Joanna's character is, in fact, the fruit of an innocent imagination — something more fictitious than real. Therefore, when we speak of female representation in Cold War, we are speaking of human parts: talent, worldview, contradiction, and, above all, the feelings that compose the character in specific contexts. But then, what is Cold War within cinema?

Art as Misery

Cold War becomes a film that magnifies art as misery. I say "misery" because within it dwells pain, the culmination of results from distinct visions such as wealth and poverty — these, within art. It is as if the "folk" mentioned in the film were the visceral vision of the socially "dead/cold" body concerning art. Thus, when due attention is placed upon folk artists, reality shows that no barriers separate "good" art from "bad" art. Therefore, what exists after all?

We find this answer in the film itself, when Zula's rise demonstrates the falseness and immorality within the circles where art is consumed. Zula's construction was idealized by a man, Pawlikowski, and destroyed by several men, characters in the film. Turning what was talent into pain.

Love and Loneliness

Love, at last... Pawel Pawlikowski transforms the condition of loving into something violent — not because it is aggressive, but because it is lonely. Separation scenes between the couple occur to establish the narrative as a true romance. What enriches them, however, are the reunions. They constitute intimate, infamous moments that demonstrate that, despite the loneliness of being in love, the perception seen by two people transforms obstacles into remarkable moments, resulting in memories.

Memories and the End of the War

Memories are moments that are not intrinsically remembered for their aesthetics, their colors, but rather for what composed the environment. So when we stop to analyze the film's main features (such as the black-and-white aesthetic), we feel a strong conviction that it was never about politics. The suicide scene of both makes this clear. The film was not about war, about exile, nor about music, but about a connection and love so intense that they drove such great dissatisfaction from missing each other that, in theory, the ending would be the same: the two side by side. Consequently, the work ends with a farewell — or... a new beginning?

The Ideal Male Figure and Dependency

I raise this question because they were never happy, not even when they were together. It was a constant pain that guided them, moments when peace was not real, and image mattered more than words. Thus, both collapsed more than once. Even so, Zula, the ideal male figure, still demonstrated her elegance. This, aesthetically and narratively, established the tendency that man needs woman so much that, even to feel something, he was a completely needy being.

Conclusion: Idealization as the Film's Key

In conclusion, the film becomes richer and richer when we understand that it is a cinema of flow. Something that gains meaning when we let it happen. Understanding does not mean merely sitting down and describing 90 minutes of a film scene by scene, but also trying to let yourself be guided by your own emotions, whether contradictory or not. In this case, the word that defines Cold War is "idealization." Within it, we find situations, characters, perspectives, and conjunctures. And it is within it that we also find inconsistent gaps, which further magnifies the film. We can finally conclude that idealization is still the key to a complex plot, with its ruptures and flaws. Still, a story with a beginning, middle, and end...

Comumente, ao citarmos filmes sobre guerra, falamos principalmente de política. Essa esfera possui suma importância no filme de Pawel Pawlikowski, pois nela mora todo o enredo. Cold War, longa de 2018, demonstra a política como plano de fundo — este, em tese, invisível. Por outro lado, a introspecção ocupa a narrativa por inteiro. Nela, residem a paz, o caos e tudo aquilo que podemos considerar parte de uma relação. 

A relação do casal protagonista não é pautada nas dificuldades da convivência, como acontece na maior parte dos filmes de romance, mas sim nos desencontros e acontecimentos da vida. Essa é a principal maneira que o roteiro encontra para intensificar e se aprofundar na psique dos personagens. Assim, quando eles se afastam, sentimos que algo está próximo: o reencontro. Quando ele acontece, parece que nosso acerto não age como fator surpresa; age como uma verdadeira conexão, onde os protagonistas são, enfim, almas gêmeas.

Mas por que esse arquétipo funciona?

O mundo da contradição é o mundo ideal. Contudo, o mundo feminino pela visão de um homem pode ser uma concepção violenta ou apenas uma perspectiva infantil, onde a mulher mora, se adapta e vive em todo lugar. Neste filme, Pawlikowski demonstra uma visão segundo a qual a personagem de Joanna é, de fato, fruto de uma imaginação inocente, algo mais fictício do que real. Portanto, quando falamos da representação feminina em Cold War, estamos falando das partes humanas: o talento, a visão de mundo, a contradição e, principalmente, os sentimentos que compõem a personagem em determinados contextos. Mas então, o que é Cold War dentro do cinema?

A arte como miséria

Cold War se torna um filme que engrandece a arte como miséria. Digo "miséria" porque nela mora a dor, a culminação de resultados sobre visões distintas como riqueza e pobreza — estas, dentro da arte. É como se o "folk", citado no filme, fosse a visão visceral do corpo "morto/frio" socialmente acerca da arte. Desse modo, quando a atenção devida é colocada sob os artistas do folk, a realidade mostra que não existem barreiras separando a arte "boa" da arte "ruim".

Portanto, o que existe afinal? Encontramos essa resposta no próprio filme, quando a ascensão de Zula demonstra a falsidade e a imoralidade nos meios onde se consome arte. A construção de Zula foi idealizada por um homem, Pawlikowski, e destruída por diversos homens, personagens do filme. Tornando o que era talento em dor.

O amor e a solidão

O amor, enfim... Pawel Pawlikowski transforma a condição de amar em algo violento — não por ser agressivo, mas por ser solitário. Cenas da separação do casal ocorrem para estipular a narrativa como um romance de fato. O que as enriquece, no entanto, são os reencontros. Eles constituem momentos íntimos, infames, que demonstram que, apesar da solidão de se estar amando, a percepção vista por duas pessoas transforma os obstáculos em momentos marcantes, resultando nas memórias.

Memórias e o fim da guerra

Memórias são momentos que, intrinsicamente, não são lembrados pela estética, pelas cores, mas sim por aquilo que compôs o ambiente. Então, quando paramos para analisar as figuras principais do filme (como a estética preto e branco), sentimos um grande convencimento de que nunca foi sobre política. A cena do suicídio de ambos deixa isso claro. O filme não era sobre a guerra, sobre o exílio, nem sobre a música, mas sobre uma conexão e um amor tão intensos que impulsionaram uma insatisfação tão grande da falta um do outro que, em tese, o final seria o mesmo: os dois lado a lado. Consequentemente, a obra termina com uma despedida — ou... um recomeço?

A figura ideal masculina e a dependência

Levanto essa questão porque eles nunca foram felizes, nem mesmo quando estavam juntos. Era uma dor constante que os guiava, momentos em que a paz não era verdadeira, e a imagem importava mais do que as palavras. Assim, ambos colapsaram mais de uma vez. Mesmo assim, Zula, a figura ideal masculina, ainda demonstrava sua elegância. Isso, estética e narrativamente, firmava a tendência de que o homem precisa tanto da mulher que, até para sentir algo, ele era um ser totalmente carente.

Conclusão: a idealização como chave do filme

Concluindo, o filme se torna cada vez mais rico quando entendemos que é um cinema de fluxo. Algo que ganha sentido quando deixamos acontecer. Entender não significa apenas sentar e descrever 90 minutos de filme cena por cena, mas também tentar se deixar guiar pelas próprias emoções, sejam elas contraditórias ou não.

 Nesse caso, a palavra que define Cold War é "idealização". 

Nela, encontramos situações, personagens, perspectivas e conjunturas. E é nela que também encontramos lacunas inconsistentes, o que engrandece ainda mais o filme. Podemos, enfim, concluir que a idealização ainda é a chave para um enredo complexo, com suas rupturas e defeitos. Ainda assim, uma história de começo, meio e fim...

The Silent Problem Within the Film Community

Much is said, within the film community, about how many movies a person can watch. Frequently, this discussion generates discomfort not because of the topic itself, but due to a generational problem related to anxiety in certain niches. This phenomenon can expand to books, music, and even reach art creators.

The fact is simple: experience ceases to be the center when the quantity of consumed units prevails. Let's not vilify anyone, for each person has their subjective way of consuming works of art. However, the reality is that the more one consumes without giving due attention and without setting aside time to formulate an opinion about the work, the more anxiety rises from the ashes.

But after all, what is this fictional figure called anxiety?

What Is Anxiety in This Context?

In our context, anxiety is an umbrella term for the pressure the public feels when facing the numbers that appear on our screens. Apps like Skoob and Letterboxd surround our experience in a way that, comparatively, proves harmful.

However, the fault is not with the apps — they were created to bring communities closer together. Comparison arises not only from obsessions with numbers but also from the frequency with which they appear. Countless movies are being released: while you try to catch up on the French New Wave, Marvel movies (which lack opinions) hit the market. Thus, the pressure you put on yourself ends up preventing you from enjoying the experience.

The way the market moves is the fruit of an ideology that, for a long time, remained hegemonic: the American Way of Life.

A Brief Historical Context of Cinema

Let's revisit the context of cinema within this market philosophy. Cinema was born as a new form of memory, much like photography. Quickly, this novel language gained different branches, giving rise to soap operas, films, and other productions. Ultimately, cinema established itself as a lucrative market.

As such, cinema gained its own economic centers, such as Bollywood and Hollywood. These major industries, within their geographic and market limitations, generate absurd revenue — not because of quality, but because of the quantity of production. Hollywood ended up becoming the main global film industry, largely due to American dominance over the market, thus falling into the aforementioned philosophy.

Therefore, when cinema establishes itself as a high-output production, it fosters high consumption, condensing an idealistic need that consists of literal consumption, without the work being read as a work of art. In short: films increasingly become less works of art and more products for sale.

The Positive Side of Cinema as a Product

Despite this, cinema as a product is not all bad — and I'll explain why. Consumption is directly linked to education. Art classes as a whole are presented incorrectly not for adults, but for children. We have a society in which screens are not seen as tools, but as escape.

When teachers talk about Kurosawa in a classroom of 12-year-olds, they are competing with short TikTok videos, which produce cheap dopamine and generate momentary satisfaction in just a few minutes. Furthermore, the current generation is one in which parents have also suffered from the harm of screens, leading to a reproduction of destructive behaviors — just as the previous generation reproduced customs such as punitive violence.

Generationally, the issue is not screen consumption, but rather what is being consumed and how people are introduced to definitively artistic works. When a child hears about Godard, they will associate the name with something completely outside their reality, constituting a literal prejudice.

How Does All of This Connect to Anxiety?

Anxiety is the result of all of this. When the niche gains strength, the generation begins to internally compete for quick content, for the adrenaline of watching the number go up on Letterboxd, for sharing with friends — but without that feeling that everything has been truly processed.

Do you see how the villain was never the niche app, but rather the way society shaped customs around works of art?

How Can We Combat This?

The truth is that we still depend on a philosophy that goes against the real stimulus of works of art. School trips to museums are lacking. Classic books are lacking in basic literature classes. But most importantly, there is a lack of direct confrontation with how screens are being used.

Screens are not villains, but they are used as an escape from problems — which is reflected in basic education, where teaching about the proper form of consumption should, finally, be functional.

Godard, Kurosawa, and Narrative Rhythm

As mentioned earlier, Godard and Kurosawa are part of a group of classic filmmakers who pace time according to the needs of the narrative. Why do I mention them? Because they are precisely the ones presented in classrooms.

The relationship between rhythm and the new generation of realistic society lies, in theory, in its precariousness of reading and content absorption. As an opposing example, we have Marvel. Comparing the examples, we see films that work within their specific niches, but Marvel produces to produce more, whereas Godard and Kurosawa produced to instigate desire.

Thus, while the work of one invites you, the work of the other obligates you — the latter because it will release more, produce more, and you need to watch it; otherwise, you'll be "behind."

Conclusion: The Anxiety That Grew With Us

Apesar disso, não é de todo mal o cinema como produto — e vou explicar. O consumo está diretamente ligado à educação. As aulas de arte como um todo são apresentadas de maneira errônea não para adultos, mas para crianças. Temos uma sociedade em que as telas não são vistas como utensílios, mas como fuga.

Quando os professores falam sobre Kurosawa numa sala para crianças de 12 anos, eles estão competindo com vídeos curtos de TikTok, que produzem dopamina barata e geram satisfação momentânea em poucos minutos. Sensorialmente, o longa conta uma história que contraria o mundo. Nireno se adapta à realidade pela maturação da ideia, da maturação da forma com que o mundo se apresenta a ela. Portanto, quando Tóquio é apresentada, ela não parece ser assustadora, sequer parece um perigo, mas é convidativa. Não por ser perfeita, mas porque, aos olhos de uma garota que não possui a maldade (que está em crescente na modernidade), parece muito mais um espaço de dança, onde todos estão aproveitando a música, do que necessariamente uma cidade grande.

Com isso, a cidade nunca foi um defeito, e sim, a resposta.

April Story é um filme ensaio. Filmes ensaio não possuem a fidelidade de um Syd Field (Manual do Roteiro), sequer um épico de Spielberg. São filmes gerados a partir de um conceito, como, por exemplo, a cena de Nireno na chuva com um guarda-chuva vermelho.

A partir de detalhes, um filme ensaio ganha corpo. É como pegar um recorte do mundo, mas não qualquer recorte, algo mínimo, algo tão “detalhe” que nem mesmo artistas conseguem enxergar.

Nem mesmo artistas?

O que quero dizer é que isso vai além do olhar artístico, é a percepção humanística dos detalhes do cotidiano. Quando algo deixa de ser arte e vira retrato. Como uma carta qualquer achada em uma livraria qualquer, uma dedicatória: quando dois mundos se revelam, enfim, uma única expressão!

Conclusão

Concluindo, é um daqueles filmes que eu apagaria a todo momento da minha memória só para assistir como se fosse a primeira vez. Mas como isso não é possível, que possamos encará-lo como o nosso ruído branco cinematográfico...
